MY FIRST VISIT TO THE PARK: • THE SMALLEST PARK IN T...
MY VISIT TO MILL ENDS PARK 2: • THE SECOND SMALLEST PA...
Deep in the heart of a city... or rather on a median in the middle of a waterfront parkway... exists what is regarded as the world's smallest park. The story of Portland's Mill Ends Park dates back to the 1940s and it has a rich history steeped in charm and mythology. With a total area of just over 450 square inches the park is more suited for pixies and leprechauns than the average everyday person. But despite its lack of size, Mill Ends Park is a solid tourist attraction and something that is continuously celebrated by locals.
In short, a local journalist named Dick Fagan, who worked out of the Oregon Journal Building along the Willamette River, found himself looking out on the intersection of what was then Front Avenue and Taylor Street, where construction work had been done. This work included making a hole for a future traffic light pole to go into. But this pole never materializes and this hole was just left there. And then, one day in 1948, so he tells it, Dick looked out and saw, to his wondering eyes, a leprechaun digging into the hole. He ran down and caught the leprechaun who then granted him one wish. Dick wished for his own park and the leprechaun obliged by giving him that little hole. And thus, Mill Ends Park (named after an editorial that Dick wrote) was born... and the rest is fairly entertaining history.
Enjoy!
