The Atari VCS version of Superman was one of my favorites, and I still play it sometimes with emulator software and an Atari joystick USB adapter. One correction, though. You don't rescue Lois Lane. She's invincible, in fact. Her purpose is to save Superman when he is struck by kryptonite, which makes him lose his flying power. When this happens, you have to find Lois Lane (who wanders through the city at random in a smart green outfit) and "kiss" her. She even kicks her leg up when they meet. This restores Superman's flying ability.

Superman is so hard to do as a video game character because he's basically invulnerable, and you need the player character to seem weak so the player can overcome limitations and feel a sense of achievement. Most Superman stories don't end with him just punching the super villain, but rather using his powers to discover the bad guy's evil plot and then using his and Lois Lane's skills as journalists to expose it. That was really hard to achieve in an arcade style game back then, but I think a modern action/adventure/rpg could work really well.

Money was scarce for a 10 year old, and many times I would have to choose between buying a pack or two Garbage Pail Kids or playing the Superman game they had in their little corner arcade section. Most of the time, the Garbage Pail Kids won out, but I do recall putting quite a few quarters in that Superman machine. Good game, but wow, what a waste of money! A year or two later, I gave away my entire GPK collection because I thought I was “too old” for that kind of stuff. It was one of the stupidest mistakes of my life behind huffing rubber cement and getting married. These days, whenever I fire up Superman in MAME, instead of a nice 5 minutes of glorious retro gameplay, I usually just break down in tears, sobbing hysterically at my terrible financial decisions over the years😜

If you can go back and turn back time, for Superman the Arcade game instead of having a pallette swap for Superman, the game would be better suited if player 2 was Supergirl for a co-op beat em up game.

I'd even say change the villains to those from the comics: Brainiac, Zod, Darkseid, Lex Luthor in his War Suit & Bizarro or any of them.

I played this game at a comic book shop I would hang out as a kid. They need to remake it for a console, they can do Batman, why not Superman in a similar style.

As I am watching this video I am taken aback over how Superman is rampaging through the US kicking parked cars till they explode and destroying trash cans and municipal property in general. Games are pretty goofy that way. Thx 4 the video.

One of my absolute favorite games as a kid, and of all time, still to this day. I played it so many times and at one point got so good at it, I could play through the entire game on less than 4 quarters. I was so disappointed as a kid that we never got a home port of this. We got that terrible NES game instead. I was actually hoping for a port on Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo, but unfortunately it never happened. The Death & Return of Superman was a cool game though and the Superman game they released for Genesis was ok, but I would have much preferred a port of this.

Four quarters, excellent. The NES version was terrible, I think it start out in Japan as a different game and just applied Superman license to it. The death and return of Superman had great graphics but I just didn't care for the game for some odd reason. I did like the Genesis game that came out but I was hoping it was a conversion of the arcade game.

Considering the date of the release along with the use of a Brainiac villain and John Williams music it sounds like Sunsoft were trying to make a template for a fifth Superman movie.

If you want to find the rom of Superman on NES edited from Sunman, search Google for PacnSac Dave, it's free on his website. It's listed as Superman 2, and has versions with both Zod and Lex as the villain.
