Great story, thank you. I rode the Mad Mouse at the Royal Melbourne Show in the 1990s. It still stands out amongst all my coaster rides for being one of the scariest. Not only was it mounted on the roof of a building making it extra high, it had plenty of rust showing on almost every metal surface. There is something comforting riding most coasters as you are in a carriage or car with several others, but with the Mad Mouse you are mostly by yourself and the sharp violent turns make it all the more memorable.

A bit more information on the Wild Mouse Rollercoaster at Luna Park Sydney - The Mouse was moved a number of times from Luna Park to Moore Park to Brisbane Echo and finally moving to Perth with Ron Pell. An interesting fact is that when the mouse was in its hey day it used to be able to operate a thousand people at hour. Eventually the mouse came back home to Luna Park Sydney at present date. For a number of years it operated at Moore Park and the cars were transferred then to the Mad Mouse in Melbourne. There are a couple of other notable coasters that could be found Luna Park Sydney - one was the Wild Cat that also operated at Luna and Moore Park - eventually it was sold to Hass Amusements. The other one missing is the main coaster, The Big Dipper. It used to run 3 trains with 72 people per ride. It was a great coaster to ride. Every couple of hours you had to walk the coaster to check it was safe. There was is one carriage of the original coaster at Luna Park for people to view to this day. Tony Maloney

Thanks for sharing, that's amazing info! A thousand people an hour is very impressive for the Wild Mouse, that's a mind-blowing fact. Thanks so much for watching and for your comment!

Un case you didn't know, the Tony Maloney you're replying to is a Luna Park legend, with a section of the park named after him. I heard a story about him and the original Big Dipper which he hasn't shared, but certainly cements his credentials. I worked at Luna for a number if years and had a bit to do with him. A true legend of the Aussie industry.

The wild mouse at the Perth Royal Show was my first credit. Pretty sure it left in 1999. The travelling Chipmunk would be my second credit.

We’re complaining about the Wild Mouse having gone in this video shot in 2000. kzitem.info/news/bejne/s2qfr6eAfHl6iJg

Great video! It is a topic that is so hard to find information on. First coaster was the Wild Mouse at the Showgrounds in Sydney. Which you say only operated there seasonally until 1995???? I must of been JUST tall enouh to able to ride with an adult. I was so young!

1995 is when the Wild Mouse was installed permanently at Luna Park. Prior to that, it travelled between Luna Park and the Showgrounds to operate seasonally at the Easter Show. I can’t find an exact date for when it last operated at the Showgrounds, but it would have been shortly prior to that, so some time in the early 90s. I believe the revival of Luna Park began works in 1994, so I would suspect 1993 was the latest it could have possibly been.

@@MaloneysCoasters If it was able to operate seasonally between the two parks, I don't see why it couldn't have operated 1994 at showgrounds, or even '95 depending on when it opened at Luna.

Was there one of these operating at Luna Park Melbourne for a brief period? I seem to have recollections of this…

I can’t seem to find any confirmation that there was, but perhaps one of them operated there briefly as they were all transportable models

Great to hear it is protected by legislation. If it ever becomes unprotected, they should strongly consider sending it to that retirement home for classic rides known as Knoebels Amusement Resort.
