I really can't understate how incredible this game is. The first 3D Zelda... with the perfect amount of main Zelda gameplay hallmarks, and while having a simple, easy to follow story on it's face, has one of the best if not, the absolute greatest subtext of any game (check out Good Blood's video of it, it's unbelievable). It's almost made playing the later Zelda games a bit, difficult. Not that they have hard gameplay or anything, it's just that OoT (maybe MM), had the perfect balance of simplicity with it's Dungeons and Key Items that I think no other Zelda game after it had. This includes the music as well. I still prefer the older video game music for the most part because their limitations forced them to really focus on the melody of the song, rather than some big orchestral piece. While orchestral pieces have their own place and after listening to the Sonic 30th Anniversary Symphony, probably one of the greatest renditions of the first Sonic game's music, it still falls back on the essence of that single melody you can pick out and hum or whistle.

I love Zelda, and I love lore, but if it isn't painfully obvious by now that Nintendo NEVER had an larger overarching plan or story I don't know what will clue people in. I mean the Historia book they put out to satiate all the people looking way, way to far into this, and fucked it up even worse. Not everything is, nor should be in the "cinematic universe" style, which ultimately becomes full of coincidence, contrivance and retconning to maintain the resemblance of continuity.

I’m 41, I’ve played EVERY Zelda the month it was released. Three of the most magic moments… 3. When link runs out of the chamber the first time in Breath of the Wild 2. The piano scales as the horse and Link run across a sunset on hyrule field as the start screen for OoT. 1. The opening 8-but notes and the flashing start screen the first time I put the game in my nes in 1986. All moments you knew you had something epic in front of you. But nothing will ever match the very first time, and I think that goes for whatever your age is and game you played first.

@@TheMentok The magic 6 year old me felt, it’s honestly one of my earliest actual memories, it was that impactful. My friends and I would let the start screen ride for minutes because after a couple of them a credits would roll of all the different items in the game, and that along with the little manual were all we had to figure out what we’d gotten, what we missed or what items were left. The magic sword became our lives’ purpose, lol. But from your post, I see that there’s always a special place in everyone’s heart for the first interaction they have with the series, no matter the game. I used OoT as an escape my freshman year in college. So much of my life I can mark by the specific Zelda, it’s insane.

There is no way I can possibly explain how mindblowing this game was in the 90s. There was simply nothing like it. It actually kinda bugs me that most of the retrospect videos are made by people who didnt play the game when it came out. Revisiting it years later after youve played dozens of games that were directly inspired from zelda doesnt do it justice. 3D was brand new. Ocarina of time was honestly the perfect "open world". Im not talking sandbox im talking a world where you traverse and have freedom to explore. Yes, areas are locked out til you get the right tools but that is actually critical to creating a good open world game. It makes a puzzle out of a world that you have the ability to move around and manipulate. Every single boss was fun, engaging and unique. They were all exciting. Boss battles were a family affair. It was new tech and everyone was interested, even adults who had long stopped playing video games.

I don’t think the collector’s edition included Master Quest. It included Zelda, Zelda 2, Ocarina, Majora, and a demo of Wind Waker. I got both the Master Quest disc and Collector’s Edition on GameCube, then when I realized I had three versions of OOT, I gave my N64 copy to a friend who had never played it. When I got to Gerudo Valley on one of my GameCube copies, I was surprised to see the Mirror Shield had been redesigned. I had already noticed some minor changes up to this point, but this caused me to actually research what happened, only to realize I had given away a first edition copy of OOT on N64 Also, as someone who collected several of the Zelda Manga back in the day, I’d love for you to cover them at some point. There was also a really cool Link To The Past comic that I think was released in issues of Nintendo Power that I really enjoyed back in the day.

7:16 -The Triforce splits when obtained by someone who doesnt have a perfect balance of all three of the golden traits. Since Link had high courage but little power/lust for it or wizdom, it would have split either way. Him even going to thw temple is what tirggered thingsbin the first place. Think of the three triforce a sort of like latern rings seeking out proper users. Each contains a triat and magic associated with one of the Golden Godesses/the magic they used for the creation of the world. When used by a being profecient in all three, ultimate power is achieved. Otherwise they have to be used one at a time and continue the existance of the land automously regaurdless. This is why Lorule started to fall when their were destoryed. The three goddesses left so the they gifted the Triforce behind to continue providing a powersource (for lack of a better word) in their stead. This is also possibly why they left Hylia in charge of it but made it so only a mortal could weild it. This ensured no being capeable of using it as a whole would since inheritantly flawed mortals will never have a perfect profeiciency with all three divine triats. I actually have a fan hypthesis that the Triforce splitting is not only the origins of the timeline split but why there are three. Courage went to Link. This is the courage or Child Timeline. Link defeats Ganon, is sent back amd sets of into the woods to find Navi. He has an adventure in a whole, scary new world which he saves. He eventually even comes back as the Hero's shade to pass his manyle onto his next incarnation. This is the timeline most indicative of the influence by the Triforce of Courage. Wizdom went to Zelda. After Link defeated Gannon she recognized the injustice caused by him having to become the hero prematurly and sends him back. She then continues on as the sole ruler over a fallen world, rebuilding it in a better image. This is the timeline most influenced by the Triforce of Wizdom. The Triorce of Power goes to Gannon. This is why there had to be the third, unexpected timeline..the hero falls. This is because Gannon wins and takes over Hyrule with an iron fist. This is the timeline most associable with the Triforce of Power. In the newer gamrs taking place way down the timeline at a point they seemed to have merged, there doesnt appear to be a direct physical triforce anymore. I think the reason is because something iccured to reiinte them. When they split, the timeline qas also split with each becoming partially fused with each timeline. By uniting them they fully merged with the reality that we see in these later ganrs themselves. This is actually an ideal sutuation as they still exist in a metaphysical way, powering the reality and world but no longer are firectly accessanle for characters to persue for abusive reasons. This has long been an issue. They are needed but caused trouble time and time again. Attmepted solutions included creating the pocket dimention Golden Relams and even destroying them physically like in Lorule but this all failed. Having them become a part of the very fabric of existance is an amazing solution, and ine that may have been a happy accident. Sure, they cant indivisually be used to solve problems on a consious level but its better than whats occured in the past. It also expalins why elements of all three timelines inhabit the world of the newer games and kind of create an incerse mirror. Goddesses make the world. Hylia rules over the land. Demon Army shows up and hyruel has to be detached from the world with the triforce hidden. Master sword made, demons defeated, Hyule returns. The triforce is eventually split and three sinultaeous timelines are formed, one for each of the triforce. The timelines are merged and the Triforce are hidden into the reality itself. The new hyrule starts to form and is threated by the new demon army where the ruler self sacrifces to gapstop the threat. This also involves the placement i.portance of the kindom and castle sepcifically. A gap occurs where a different incarnation of the hero helps Zelda overcome this same evil. Firther down yet, another incarnation fianlly helps yet another incarnation put a stop to the threat to get things back to a more normalized, whiel still conparatievly more primative state with the REcreation of the master sword. The Triforce split in the timeline was the middle part of the timeline with history sort of inversely repeating utself now like a big crunch after the big bang has slwoed to a stop..and perhaps then, things will repeat yhe cycles with the release of the current combined realities and splititng of the Triforce again. I feel they are now the glue holding this reality togther so if they were to somehow be magically called upon in physical form, the reality we know would again split with whatever ones were called upon being removed as elements of that timeline. The three leviathan Fossils also sort of support this timeline split mentality by having one fossil of Levias (most likely), a being before the split. Next, one being most likely the Windfish, a being from after the timeline split toward the middle of the timeline. Finally, one more that we can't closly identify to any existing character..and thus likley being an indication of one that occured after the split was reuinted in the mirrored opposite of Levias existance in the timeline.
