For vegans, vegetarians, and turkey non-enjoyers, Thanksgiving can be a challenge.
But there's an alternative: tofurky.
Tofurky is a turkey roast substitute made primarily of wheat gluten and a small amount of tofu.
It even comes with a stuffing made of wild rice and bread.
While it doesn't resemble a bird, it has a shape similar to a turkey breast, making it realistic.
Tofurky was invented by Seth Tibbot, a man who lived in a treehouse in Oregon.
After becoming a vegetarian in 1972, Tibbot discovered tempeh, a traditional Indonesian food made from fermented soybeans.
He founded Turtle Island Foods and began making and selling his own tempeh.
In 1995, Tibbot partnered with vegetarian caterers Rhonda and Hans Warbel to produce meat-free Thanksgiving roasts, which became the Tofurky Holiday Roast.
At first, people had their doubts about Tofurky.
But it quickly became an instant hit among non-meat eaters.
One consumer wrote, "Finally I am not a second class citizen at Thanksgiving anymore!"
Because of its popularity, Turtle Island Foods expanded their products to include meatless sausages, deli slices, and hot dogs.
The taste of Tofurky can be described as that of plain chicken, with a somewhat rubbery texture.
The flavor is enhanced by the spices added to it, such as sage, olive oil, soy sauce, and garlic.
Tofurky even has its own vegan gravy for topping.
While nothing official has been announced, Tofurky has been releasing new meatless alternatives, including a plant-based burger.
So, we can expect more innovations from Tofurky in the future.
What started as one man's solution to vegetarianism has become a staple in the non-meat eating lifestyle.
Tofurky has given vegans and vegetarians a feeling of comfort and inclusion at the Thanksgiving table.
