17:50 - One of my favorite moments of the early genesis of the The Attitude Era. Bret’s promo was absolutely incredible and the way they played it with McMahon made it seemed like there was a high level of truth behind it all. Everyone from Bret, to Austin, to UT and Micheals were at, or near, their absolute peak and the angles were awesome. 1997 was my favorite year for professional wrestling. The Big Blue was easier for Hogan to climb, and was also easier to get a handheld camera between the bars to get a good shot, and in general was easier for wide cameras to focus on the wrestlers. The ability to drop the cage from ceiling was a game changer. Before that, any cage match required a lengthy intermission to set up. As my dad commented to me after the Snuka/Muraco cage match (Buffalo, NY edition), It took twice as long to set up the cage as it took to have the match.

However I would absolutely love a video detailing the history of the house show circuit and how they were similar/different than TV events. In particular, how did house shows work while wrestlers were also doing TV work. Could anyone get tickets to these events? I think other more casual fans would appreciate a deep dive into the concept of house shows and how they were used in major promotions.Thank you so much for creating these videos! I grew up a NY WWF wrestling fan. The Big Blue Cage meant BUSINESS! When you heard 'steel cage' the excitement was palpable. The very sight of the cage on match day was awe inspiring & you knew something special & brutal was about to happen. Years later while watching NWA I was so disappointed that their "steel cages" were simply large panels of backyard fencing. I couldn't believe it & to me as a little kid that fence 'cage" was just oh sooo lame.

Just a memory, I love to share, at 12:02, you’re showing a listing of house show cage matches. Listed is Shawn Michaels vs Randy Savage. Imo, it was one of the best matches I’ve ever seen. I was 9 so take that into consideration. This was old school Boston and the match was meant to be Jake Roberts vs Savage. When Fink announced Jake Roberts would not be appearing due to personal reasons, the crowd went crazy. I learned more curse words in 30seconds than I had my entire life. People were unbelievably upset. The show went on and then the main event. Even though Shawn was the heel, he was treated like the antichrist and a Rocker who didn’t deserve to be there, he ate it up, he climbed to the top of the blue cage and did the famous pose and flex. Which made the crowd furious.... but worked. Fans instead of wanting him to just go away now really wanted to see him get smashed by Savage. They had an AMAZING match. It was the moment I learned about wrestling psychology. I remember everyone leaving really happy.

IDK it always seemed weird to me that you work to get locked into a cage with your rival and the way to end the feud is to essentially run away. I've personally always preferred pins and submissions in cage matches. The sniveling heel should be made to get his comeuppance with his shoulders pinned or by tapping out rather than not being able to escape which is what they usually did every time leading up to the cage being booked. It's all semantics though, if the match was quality the finish could be anything and still be good.

@@Mayhem5150 In the carny days and early territory days, that was actually the idea of the cage. They didn't use the cage itself as a weapon back then (well I'm sure they did but that wasn't the draw), but it was a common heel tactic to just run away from the babyface and lose the match by count out to either prevent a championship loss or for the heel to just taunt the face and work up the crowd. The cage was intended to force a definitive end to the feud.

Great video!. Thanks for posting this. This was fun. I still love the Big Blue Cage. That Hogan vs. Mr. Wonderful and Hart vs. Hart matches are still some of my favourites.

Havnt even watched vid yet but I remember watching Warrior v Rude with my dad, (who wasn't a wrestling fan). Warrior did his usual run around the ring and my dad burst out laughing. I asked what so funny and he said " The dozy hippy cant find the door". Well I was an absolute mark so there was a lot of friction in my house that night. Good times. Thanks for making a vid on the cage my friend.

I have a long time memory of a Saturday Night's Main Event, Hulk Hogan vs. Big Boss Man. Hulk Hogan suplexed Boss Man back in the ring from the top rope. I been to a couple of live events in Buffalo with Cage matches. They were fun.

The Warrior - Rude match was huge. It for whatever reason had significantly more hype by word of mouth than almost any wrestling match I remember in that era. It was up there with Warrior - Hogan except it seem even more so. You couldnt go a day without out some kid talking about it in school and even for months afterwards. I think it just had alot to do with the way it was hyped, using the past matches with Rude and Warrior to hype it up as like a Thrilla in a Manilla type fight trilliogy. Im sure it had alot to do with the phenomena of the Ultimate Warrior himself. I might be bias because late 80s to early 90s was my era and Warrior was my favorite for years even before he won the title but the energy and popularity he and his fans had was insane. It was at least for a short time in my opinion greater than Hulkamania and it had a different flavor to. Warrior didnt use the same generic phrases as Hogan and other guys. He said weird insane stuff that made you question his origin and sanity. My type of guy. That short reign he had was strangely electrifying in a way no one has been before or since. the Macho King - Warrior match was big too but I dont remember it sticking out as much as the Rude match. I also remember the Hogan - Bundy match pretty well but I cant recall if I watch it as it happened. I think I rented it on vhs years later like I eventually did with every wrestle mania from 1 to 6. I also distinctly remember Warrior "accidentally" pulling Rude's pants down as Rude tried to crawl out the cage door.

"Introduced as a necessity to contain King Kong Bundy" is absolutely _amazing._

The last Piper/Orndorf cage match was in the regular cage and not the big blue cage. I can verify that because I was there and still have the tape we used to record from the third row. The big blue cage was painted black because they wanted it to match the theme as well as make it less distracting for the viewers.
