Grew up with the TV version, then read the books then the radio shows. They were all different in their own way but Douglas' wonderful humour bound them all together. And I think this movie is a very fitting tribute to a great writer cos it has that same dry wit. Thanks so much for posting. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

The importance of towels is a constant theme throughout all the books. The idea being that towels are infinity useful and that no Hitch-hiker should travel without one. People are also more likely to give you a lift if you have a towel (gets complicated). In the books towels have saved fords and Aurthur's lives many times (fords towel has re-enforced seams, some wire threaded into it, and one corner has been soaked in nutrients so you can suck on it when desperate need of sustenance!)

I must say, now viewing knowing that Douglas Adams changes the story a bit with every medium Hitchhiker's is in, this is quite a good movie. It very much keeps up the spirit of the series while still being its own work. Also, I don't think there has ever been better casting than Alan Rickman as Marvin.

A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta…wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat…wrap it around your head to ward off noxious fumes…any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it … win through, and still know where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

The TV adaptation has more meat on its bones, as it were, but I prefer some things in this movie version; Trillian is definitely a much more rounded and real character, Zooey does a great job, while Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy, and Helen Mirren are perfectly cast. Martin Freeman is definitely on a par with Steve Jones, with a different but equally good interp. Mos Def I found odd at first but he does a good job, while Sam Rockwell is cool. Malkovich's character seems to have been forgotten though.

The reanimation of the Earth is really something. I wish I had the books with me now... I remember that there was something about Slartibartfast that I really enjoyed, maybe something he said... Even though it has so many departures from the book, this movie is one of the best I've seen. I mean, the Heart of Gold is supposed to look like a giant, golden shoe, not a silver softball. In any case, thank you for uploading this wonderful bit of lunacy

> Even though it has so many departures from the book Actually, that is exactly in line with every adaption Adams did. The books have their path and events but they are different from the audio series (which was first) and also both are different slightly from the TV series. Basically each version Adams did had many of the same jokes and characters but each version had slightly different events, additional characters here and there and in fact the radio plays and the books have a major difference which actually took me by surprise! (I read the books before the audio series) So when I watched this film I didnt expect anything other than the usual "its going to be much the same story but its going to do different things with it", and that's exactly what Adams did. I mean, visiting Vogsphere and really looking at how the Vogons evolved was one of the best scenes in the movie! I also noticed that in the radio series (and the book I think) its very clear that Arthur is having as much trouble as Ford while listening to the Vogon poetry, yet in the movie, this Arthur seems to be largely immune to its effects, leaving Ford writhing. I have a feeling this is something to do with the joke about the worst poetry having been written on Earth, somehow this has desensitised Arthur :D

I heard that story recently in an interview with Adam's friends & co-workers. 🐬 In the 70s, Adams was traveling through Europe with a trusted copy of "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to Europe." Laying in a field snockered and gazing up at the stars, he thought, "Someone should write a Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy"... 🌌

@SpartaClan That's the thing about movie-Books. When you read a book, you have to imagine everything with the words. When you have a movie made, it represents another person's interpretation. That is the reason why people complain about movie plots and inaccuracies. It is always different to what you imagined, from the character's faces, voices or object placement...
