First time I've seen a reactor immediately recognize Balin's name. And one of the dwarves is Gimli's father. If you don't catch the name (it was tossed out a couple times in Lord of the Rings) I won't ruin the reveal that comes in the second movie.... (Edit) should have watched a few more seconds, I thought you had skipped past the introductions when I was typing the first part. It's great that you enjoyed the lore so much. You should react to in-depth lore videos after this trilogy. Something to keep the Tolkien fix going. Just as a teaser, imagine how epic the earlier days of this world were when Smaug can take two kingdoms on a whim over the course of an afternoon, and he is nothing compared to the dragons and other monsters of that time.

This series disappointed some fans because it veers a little from the Tolkien canon, especially Parts 2 and 3. One of the problems is that it's essentially an expansion of the original, whereas LOTR was a redaction, and that meant added characters and new material. But what the hell, we still get a rip-roaring ride through the ever fascinating realm of Middle Earth. Your joy and enthusiasm is so infectious, well versed in the lore. 52:06 Good question! Gandalf's and Thorin's swords are indeed of the same make as Bilbo's, and in the book all three glow when orcs are near. In the movie, well, they didn't go to the trouble of making Glamdring glow in Moria or Minas Tirith back in the early 2000s, since it didn't really matter to that story nor was it stated in that dialogue, so I suppose they couldn't suddenly have it glow. And since they weren't doing Glamdring, it seems they decided not to do Orcrist either. Again it doesn't really matter to the story (although there is one scene where it would have been nice). The only problem is that they included a line of dialogue that indicates (to the attentive viewer like you) that both swords should be glowing, and that causes confusion. 😕

I just would like to say a few things... First things first... Hobbit (I mean the book) was Tolkien's first work which became famous. And he wrote it to his children. That's the reason why this story is more like a child's story, full of musics, rhyms. The book is the same... But LOTR... is way darker. In LOTR, there are chants and rhyms too, but The Professor put the focus on the mythology. It is complicated, because lot of people compare the Hobbit movies to LOTR movies, and that is the mistake. It is just different because the book is different too. But Peter Jackson had to work reverse. He directed LOTR and tried to create a prequel. And the way I see, he did it brilliant, because he put lots of things to these movies which wasn't in the original book but matched with Tolkien's world... For me, I love Hobbit, and I try to watch it as a Lotr prequel, not a book adaptation. (I'm baised with Tolkien's works... sorry) :)

Your enthusiasm and enjoyment is so infectious! Well done on bringing together the parts from LotRs here. Do remember that The Hobbit was written as a children’s book and was one relatively short book, so much has been expanded and added. Also the book was much lighter in context than subsequent books. Therefore, enjoy these films for what they are. You’ve a greater insight into this world than anyone else I have watched viewing them.

This trilogy is underrated because a lot of "fans" said that it feels different from The Lord of the Rings trilogy but it's really supposed to feel different. Translation: "We don't want to get a lecture and a cuff upside the head from our uncle." >.< Also a fun little bit of lore. Centuries before this, Dol Goldur was called Amon Lanc once upon a time and was where Thranduil and his father, Oropher, lived when Oropher was King of the Mirkwood elves. When Sauron started getting more powerful during the second age Oropher abandoned it and moved the elves away to the far north side of the forest. He also wanted to get further away from the dwarves of khazad'dum because he didn't trust them. After he moved out, it didn't take Sauron and/or the Nazgul that long to move in and take it over to use as a base of operations in the south side of the forest. It was after that that it became known as "Dol Goldur".

@28:18 this scene was invented for the movie and serves as the "nudge" Gandalf mentions to Frodo during their first scene in The Fellowship of the Ring. "If you're referring to the business with the dragon, I was barely involved. All I did was give your uncle a little nudge out of the door." In the book, The Hobbit, Gandalf literally did nudge Bilbo out the door to catch up with the dwarves. When they were busy adapting the book into screenplay form, they decided to have Gandalf give Bilbo a metaphorical nudge instead so that Bilbo then makes up his own mind to go after the dwarves the next morning. A stronger character moment for him.

The reason Thranduil wanted the jewels, which were a part of his wife's dowry, was that he had engaged the Dwarf Jewelers to set them in a fine necklace, in memory of his wife (Legolas' mother,) who was killed in a battle with Orcs, far in the north. Thror was so taken by the jeweller's efforts that he raised the price, which Thranduil took as a mortal insult, as he had already paid for them according the contract. Thranduil cut off ALL trade with Erebor (But not with the nearby town Esgaroth or, through them, with the people of Dale) until Thror relented, which, of course he did not do....

35:33 HOnestly, this is the problem. This trilogy of films is trying to be a recreation of LOTR rather than an actual adaptation of the novel THE HOBBIT. All three have some lovely things in them, but... well, it does not recreate the magic. But I did think this was generally pretty nice. And there are very nice things in it. 39:35 Long ago, this was a great Elven fortress. It was a abandoned, then taken over by Orcs. It is called Dol Guldur. 47:17 Tolkien wrote a lot of things after LOTR, but hardly finished anything. Among other things, he wrote a lot of histories, and one of them touched on Olorin--which is Gandalf's "real" name. Olorin was highly revered, not least because since the beginning of the world he studied a new thing very closely, that is, pity. He was renowned for wanting the best for others and not caring about whether he himself got any credit. When the call came, he was reluctant to travel to Middle Earth and become a wizard, but pretty much everyone thought he was an obvious choice. 54:03 Yes, this is part of what's really nice in these films, the sense of history and of Bilbo's genuine journey. Radaghast is barely mentioned anywhere in the books, but I liked meeting him. He is a fun, and very good, character. I agree with Gandalf, he is a very great wizard. 54:22 "Mithrandir" is the name the Elves gave to Gandalf. It means "grey pilgrim." Gandalf, which means "magic staff" is the name Men gave him. But as noted before, his original name was Olorin.
