February 29, 1984, was hardly a nice day. Fog swallowed the small town of Hohenthurm, near Halle in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Kind of day when you don’t leave your home unless you need to go to work. Indeed, the only people you could find in the village that day were workers embarking on a train at the local railway station. With minds set only on getting home for a nice cup of hot tea, no one was aware there was another train just a few hundred yards away. Rushing at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour, it was more like a huge projectile coming out of a thick fog. Workers at the station never even saw it coming. They just heard a big bang.
