OMG I love The Hollies !!!!! "The story of the song ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’ is a poignant one that has stood the test of time. This song was written by Bobby Russell while battling cancer, and it was later performed by The Hollies in 1969, reaching high positions on several charts worldwide. The song’s title comes from the logo for Boys Town, a community established in 1917 by Father Edward Flanagan in Omaha, Nebraska, where homeless and troubled boys could receive help. The phrase “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” captures the spirit of Boys Town and has become synonymous with charity."

I always assumed it had something to do with the war considering when it came out. Maybe it was in a war movie or something. But I'm glad I got the story of where the title came from. Boys Town In 1918, Reuben Granger, an older boy at Father Flanagan's Home for Boys, carried Howard Loomis, a boy with polio, up and down the stairs. When Father Flanagan asked Reuben if carrying Howard was difficult, Reuben replied, “He ain't heavy, Father… he's m' brother”. The phrase has become iconic and symbolizes the spirit of Boys Town.

This reaction is kind of the essence of the '60's (and 70's), whereby the artists were real and sharing themselves live and people like you listened and discussed the music and themes. The Hollies were simply awesome, and kind of heavy, too. They were pros, so all the music is good, even if you don't click with it all.

This song was written back in (1969). It's about a very famous boys' home in Omaha Nebraska USA known as "Boys Town." They made a movie about it back in (1938) starring Spencer Tracey as Father Flanagan who started (Boys Town) and Mickey Rooney. The story goes... When it was time to go to dinner a priest saw a boy carrying another boy on his back and ask the boy can he help carrying him to the dining hall. The boy replied, "That's okay Father He Ain't Heavy, He's, My Brother." Today they have a statue in Boys Town of a boy carrying another boy piggyback. The song was written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell who were visiting Boys Town. They heard about the story and decided to write a song about it. And the rest is history. Another monster hit by the Hollies is their (1972) "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress." This was one of their greatest hits. It was a banger.

The Hollies were formed in Manchester, England in 1962. They released their first single "(Ain't That) Just Like Me" on the 17th May 1963. That was the first of 94 singles. The group released 21 studio albums, 22 compilation albums and 7 EP'S. They had 30 chart singles in the UK, including 2 number 1's, 21 singles on the Billboard chart in the USA, including, Long Cool Woman(In A Black Dress) which peaked at number 2, and 25 singles on the German charts. In 2010 The Hollies were inducted (many would say belatedly) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio USA. If you are looking for another Hollies number to use in a video, I would recommend "The Air That I Breathe," a beautiful ballad written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood. I always look forward to your videos, such a lovely couple.

The song refers to the surviving combatants of the Vietnam War who, upon returning home, manifested nervous disorders and psychological imbalances such that being too often judged as crazy ("He Ain't Heavy") by the family, those around them and the community, they experienced inhumane exclusion ("He's My Brother"). On this issue, it is the most beautiful and moving song to have been composed and recorded. Thanks. [NB: Two musical instruments were favored by the fighters sent to Vietnam: the guitar and the harmonica.]

The Osmond Brothers adopted this as their theme song - ended all their concerts with it. And they did it justice ... in five part harmony. And this quote from Robert McCammon's delightful book, Boy's Life, explains very well why many adults cannot hang on to the mystery of the childlike wonder they formed in their youth: "We are born with whirlwinds, forest fires, and comets inside us. We are born able to sing to birds and read the clouds and see our destiny in grains of sand. But then we get the magic educated right out of our souls. We get it churched out, spanked out, washed out, and combed out. We get put on the straight and narrow and told to be responsible. Told to act our age. Told to grow up, for God’s sake. And you know why we were told that? Because the people doing the telling were afraid of our wildness and youth, and because the magic we knew made them ashamed and sad of what they’d allowed to wither in themselves." Love the song! Loved your reaction to the song! And love you! Carry on, my friends!
