@@FredLord-sp4ym - I've always wondered if there was "crossover" in celebrity appearances - those who did both "Match Game '7_" and the Marshall "Squares." However, as far as "The Odd Couple" (the TV series) went, there seemed a divide - Tony Randall was on occasion a "Square," while Jack Klugman occasionally did the '70's Rayburn "Match Game." (Although according to Rose Marie, Klugman did a few "Squares" as well, thus by that he would've been on both.)

Does anyone know who of the "Match Game" regulars (including host Gene Rayburn) put in time as "squares" in the 15 years (counting both NBC daytime and syndicated versions) Peter Marshall was "master" of "The Hollywood Squares"?

Everytime I see the late Sonny Bono(1935-1998)I see my late stepbrother Mr.Eugene Blaine Montz Jr.aka GENE OR GINO(4-25-1939-3-25-1997) Gene & Sonny could pass as twin brothers.I also remember Gene telling me about how the cafeteria at the old Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point Plant in Md would be jam packed from most of the guys watching The Hollywood Squares daytime NBC version that Gene couldn.t even go in to get lunch!!

The question they gave Paul Lynde at the 10:00 point must have been pretty rough for him to answer. He *did* make one of his typical quips, but he definitely seemed more thoughtful about how to respond than he usually does.

I noticed that too. As soon as Peter asked the question you could see a look of almost uneasiness on Paul’s face.

It is interesting that in this episode, Joan Rivers is in one of the squares and in the late 80s version, she was the center square for about 85% of the time. Plus, Debbie Reynolds is in the center right square sitting to the left of Paul Lynde, and that's coincidental when it comes to voice acting. At the same time Debbie was sitting next to Paul, Charlotte the spider was sitting next to Templeton the rat.

Loved that old Hollywood Squares theme called Merrill and Bob.s theme which I renamed Peter.s theme after Peter Marshall.(1969-1979)Also like the Stan Worth Squares disco theme 1979-81 as far as the original Squares.

Do you get the feeling, as I do, that in writing "Merrill and Bob's Theme," William Loose seemed to have been inspired by the horn-laden instrumental section in Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" before he started off, "I love you, baby . . . "? (And, to tie it all in, Mr. Valli was one of the "squares" in the Marshall era, in 1979.) It was certainly along those lines, for sure, though the vocalizing was a different touch.

For the time, both Hollywwod Squares and Match Game were pretty "woke" -- or at least worldly and tolerant. Sure Richard Dawkins typically did an effeminate voice when pretending to be gay. But he also made a pretty sharp joke against Anita Bryant. At any rate, they're great shows (as is Family Feud).

It could be said that the Marshall "Squares" was like the proverbial "lightning in a bottle" that was caught once, and any subsequent replications went way off the mark. But it wasn't just Mr. Marshall. Announcer Kenny Williams was another part of the equation.
