The Horn Curving Ceremony at Manyang Cattle Camp
Congratulations to Agat Makuëi e Ghok/Magak and Anɛ̈k/Agut Ayɛn on their achievements and contributions to the community. May they continue to inspire others with their dedication and leadership.
The horn curving ceremony for Matuor Deng-Buol oxen Mariaar was held at Manyang Cattle Camp near Juba on June 19, 2024. The event starts at 6:00 a.m. This ceremony allows individuals to connect with their cultural heritage, learn traditional skills, and celebrate their community’s values and customs. It also offers an opportunity to share experiences, strengthen social bonds, and foster a sense of belonging among members. The Pathuyith (patook) community and the family of Nuer Akol are excited about how the event was attended by Bor Community with its neighbours from Mundari.
Horn curving is a traditional practice in many cattle-herding communities, such as the Nuer and Dinka in South Sudan. The process involves bending the horns of cattle using wooden poles and ropes, shaping them into spirals or other decorative forms. This practice has both practical and symbolic purposes; it makes the cattle easier to handle and herd, and it also signifies social status, bravery, and wealth. The person who curves the horns demonstrates their skill and strength, while the cattle represent prosperity and fertility.
