This video drops a lot of details from the dark eldar trilogy. They are eldar, much closer to dark eldar because they live in one of the Commoragh demensions and they are not as esoteric as video tells. In the books there was a homunculus which got into an allience with one of two kings of the realm. He got into it without selling his dreams or something but by making monstrosities for the army. And said king was corrupted by Nurgle. They are not some shadowy demons but just shadow wizard money gangers.

@dalaminaubis7822

I've always imagined that they are a group of Aeldari who broke off from the rest right before or during the birth of Slaanesh. They found a means of evolving themselves either through a combination of science and sorcery, or possibly making a pact with an as of yet unknown Eldar God of darkness and primordial fear, the shadow of the pantheon that congealed somewhere in the warp and then hid in the webway like Cegorach during the Fall. And perhaps while the Drukhari consume pain and misery to replenish themselves from the drain of Slaanesh, the Mandrakes consume fear to feed the god of their realm, pouring it into the endless well of shadow that they themselves live within.
@MrJameslupien

I always liked to think they were creations of the old ones to fight off the c'tan and necrons but they lost control of them or they are screwed first attempts to make the eldar and were cast into the void once the severity of how bad the old ones screwed up became obvious.

Hey, thank you very much for this video. Always nice to see the more obscure parts of the lore getting some spotlight. You did a great job with this. One small correction - there was one major attack on Commorragh by Mandrakes after "Path of the Archon". It was during Ynnead Dysjunction, so the greatest demonic invasion that Commorragh ever faced (described in "The Gathering Storm"). The climax of this invasion was one of my favourite scenes in the whole 40k universe: "The gaze of a thousand perfect skulls met in the middle of his lair and bored a hole in the wall between worlds, opening a gateway to the midnight dimension of the Mandrakes. A morass of shadowy assassins and tenebrous monsters spilled like an inky flood through the streets, and slew every soul within a dozen miles. In the space of a single night, that region became the shadow kingdom of the Decapitator, long- lost monarch of the Mandrakes. His was a new reign of terror, his throne set within a sea of living shadow that consumed even the Daemon invaders that strayed within its grasp." The Monarch of Mandrakes summoned a giant sea of living shadows, that took over parts of the Commorragh and consumed Daemons alive. And then he made himself a fucking throne on this murder-sea. How cool is that?
@Scudboy17
5 ай бұрын
Yeah, mandrakes are the druhkari uber stealth assassins, but don't forget Sgt Mkoll from Gaunts Ghosts successfully hunted one of the best of them and took them out almost effortlessly. Same Mkoll that took out a wounded chaos dreadnought 1 on 1. He's one scary Ghost.
@gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954
5 ай бұрын
Just a point of clarification, but when Dan Abnett wrote that book the Mandrakes were still simply a subset of Dark Eldar specialising in scouting and infiltration - it was only later that GW redesigned the Mandrakes as messed up shadow monsters with a large suit of supernatural powers. Mkoll is a scary Ghost to be sure, but he is still just a man (even if an exceptionally skilled man) in the lore.
@HalduBouyaNono2

Fortunately, "Path of the Archon" shows us that even those demons/eldars/ghosts able to teleport whenever and wherever they want, who are mostly invulnerable to physical damages, who always have the surprise effect or the psychological warfare on their side, master assassins, can't win against a named character.

Your first comment makes absolute sense We all fear the unknown but most don't truly know it. We all have the sense to realise there are dozens of active serial killers etc but we ignore it but when our pet acts funny or we hear an unexplained and unexpected noise late at night, we shit ourselves. In the daylight, we realised it was probably a scavenger searching out bins, or a neighbours but in the dark when it's unexplained we get more scared but we ain't scared of the dark, right? But the dark makes it harder to see and understand and so, more scary to us
@UGNAvalon
5 ай бұрын
The thing about the serial killers tho: if you’re truly cognizant of the potential threat of _Literally Anyone_ being a serial killer, you’d be completely paranoid toward strangers. Fear of the unknown still applies. The only thing that prevents this paranoia is the recognition that 99.99% of the time it’s not a killer you’re walking past. But as soon as the context changes - An unfamiliar setting, a sudden influx of newcomers of dubious background, a surprise increase in the murder/crime rate, visiting a familiar place at an unfamiliar time, etc - then the fear of the unknown returns, as does the paranoia. Additionally, the thing about “pets acting funny” & “unexpected noises” is just that: they’re unexpected. Your neighbor &/or their dog could be literal murderous cannibals, but since they act normal, you don’t suspect a thing. Or if your neighbor acts all creepy but is a decades-long friend of yours, the familiarity offsets the creepiness factor. ….Dang, what did I just write??

I have a hypothesis after watching your video... What if Mandrakes are Aeldari who formed a pact with a Ctan (or something similar) so as not to be consumed by Slaanesh? Their souls corrupted by shadow, turned into poison that even She Who Thirsts could not consume without becoming ill. By the Omnissiah, imagine these creatures utilizing other shadowy denizens, like Umbra, to enact their vile deeds.
@gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954
5 ай бұрын
I absolutely love the reimagining of the Mandrakes from simple Dark Eldar scouts to their modern incarnation as full on, nightmarish semi-ethereal shadow monsters. They have a clear visual influence flowing from J-horror standouts like The Grudge that contributes to their unsettling appearance, and have a powerset that hits all kinds of classic horror tropes and essential human fears of darkness and not being able to see what is hunting you until it is too late. Indeed, they are almost the Freddy Krugers of 40K, though they control shadows to manipulate reality instead of controlling dreams. The idea of these things being able to crawl out of any area of darkness, any shadow, and any reflection really ramps up the feeling that nowhere is truly safe. They are definitely my favourite part of both the Drucharri model range and lore.

If you're looking for cheap or temporary sound deadening for your current recording space, moving blankets are ideal to use. You can drape them across your walls or you can set up a cone of silence around your recording setup using stuff like cheap coat racks as the frame using binder clips to attach the moving blankets. Ikea also sells room dividers that could be used, although they are a bit more pricey, or they have privacy screens designed for balconies that fold away pretty easily that might suit your purposes. Good luck with it, I hope you find yourself a suitable and permanent recording space soon.

I know they arent daemons in the traditional sense, but part of me wants Aleindrach to be some sort of warp shadow/mirror of commoragh, with Mandrakes essentially being fear based warp entities rather than anything chaos based. The way you portray them in this video seems they're pretty much invincible (aside from the ones who died in the invasion) 2. Would they be able to terrorize a Space Marine? If I'm not mistaken, they're unable to understand fear or terror. if that's the case, they would pretty much be invulnerable to Mandrake's tactics. Love your videos, keep up! Cheers

That description of the silent hunters' novel sounds like a story making autism into some sort of superpower like that predator movie everyone hated and specifically got called out for making autism into a superpower.

These xenos sound really cool. I wonder what in the warp empowers them. Anything Eldari is a fascinating observation. I say this because the Eldari are rich in history along side the Necrons. Makes everything else a misfit meme of a species compared to those two factions. Thanks Wes for introducing us to the Mandrake lore.

I rolled my eyes when you mentioned them just going through voidshields and appearing inside cockpits of knights and titans... That's just dumb.

Lets go! A video on mandrakes! I still haven't gotten around to finishing the Path of the Dark eldar books yet, but this is giving me a lot of of incentive too.
