This train is travelling to Newmarket after a race meeting at Piercefield Park in Chepstow. This horseracing venue had only opened in the previous year. It has since become the venue for the Welsh Grand National.
The advent of the railway network in many respects transformed horse racing - much bigger crowds could assemble from further afield, and as a consequence racing moved from open ground to enclosed venues with controlled admission. This growth in crowd size also made betting a more lucrative business.
Atbara class (or Class 4100) No. 4138 ‘White’ is at the head of this train as it was one of the GWR locos that was fitted with dual braking systems. It was built in 1900, one of 40 locomotives in the class, and named after a senior army commander, Sir George White, VC.
