This book was one of the books I had to read in middle school, I would think it was a waste and wouldn't understand. But as soon as I got to class and the teacher would explain to us, it made me realize how much there was in this book. I really enjoyed the book at the end because I interpreted and analyzed the text something I learned that not everything is easily seen.

I think it's better to read the book as an adult, looking back on childhood. I think young people would miss a lot of the novel's point because they are still immersed in what the protagonist is dealing with.

I think this is a great book. It doesn't follow the traditional structure of a novel, though. It's more like a collection of very poetic vignettes. I think that's what some people here don't like about it. As she says in the video on writing, she was experimenting with genre.

People find this novel boring because it's purely a book of symbolism. It's not a book you can read chapter after chapter, you must interpret each and every chapter to understand its purpose. You should know background knowledge about the author to find the reoccurring themes in the book. This is a book you must annotate or else it is extremely boring and plain.
@brrrrrrrrino

It's not a difficult or boring book to read though.....sure its filled with imagery and symbolism but I think people here just can't *relate* to the message Sandra C was trying to illustrate...whereas a lot of us (esp Latinx women) literally go thru the same obstacles as the women in the book....which is why we love and appreciate it so much.

Adolescence is much more than trying to fit in and loneliness. However, some adolescents feel that way on the inside while outside, rebellious and disgraceful. The world is common in a male-dominated society, but its a better place if teenage girls remembered they have so much inside of them and don't have to express themselves as snappy anymore. Young women no longer fall into the hands of the famous men they love (damsels in distress). With this book being written, it will help us understand how to fit in with the world, not the people around you.

It's a disappoint to see all of these ignorant posts from our youth. Your teacher is not making you read this book. You have the opportunity to read this book. Your attitudes are the reason our society is dumbing down. Reading literature is a gift and this book is very similar to the stories of so many women.

Sabrina Wells Actually, our teachers are forcing us to read this book, if we don't read it we can't graduate from high school. Normally i love reading, but this book doesn't strike me as interesting at all. This book will not help me become a biological engineer, thus i don't know why i have to read it. So, i am sorry that i am dumbing down because i don't want to read this book.

Zack Weever I understand that you have career goals. That is a good thing, however, it is also important to be educated about other cultures, genders, and society issues. Gender issues are very important and need to be understood by both sexes. This book does a great job of showing the issues that women have to deal with, not only in the Latino culture, but in every culture. We learn, grow, and change from the stories of others. Get used to having to learn things that are not specific to your career. Your studies and an open mind will make you a more interesting and well rounded person.

Quite honestly, I dislike the message of this book because it is so heavily riddled with feminist points of view towards things. I know it's about a girl,but why not balance it out with the perspective of a man? Is the man always a bad guy? No, but when my English class read it, a huge majority of the girls admitted that this book changed their opinion/view towards the opposite gender. I do like how she embodied the voice of a younger child, but the jumping around of the book cancels out that fancy.
@giovannihortua5152

The book doesn't make sense unless you understand the history of Chican@s and minorities of the era it's coming out of. Why wouldn't Cisneros implement her views as a woman of color when the discourse in looking at her own community were/are heavily patriarchal. She's not delivering a male vision of Mango Street. It's kinda like expecting Maya Angelou to make Whites the center of her stories. Think about it.

***** Not all guys are the same...and sexism does exist. The book isn't just about trust, it's about locating yourself within the environment you operate as well as self-respect. Something that in minority cultures, which underscore male dominance, still attack women for being schooled, intelligent, and not subservient.
