This song and whole scene have a sinister and cruel undertone to the revelry and I love it. Hunchback takes flak these days for playing on stereotypes and having a murky message, but it reminds the viewer many people not that long ago (and unfortunately even some still today) treated differences like physical deformities or cultural minorities like the Roma very harshly and unfairly. Disney actually went out on a limb with this one

Baladria Disney marketed the hell out of the Festival of Fools as the festival and the gargoyles were the only parts of the movie that could be used to cleverly disguise this movie as a "fun comedy." @JJdaPK
7 жыл бұрын
Unlike A Guy Like You, I actually don't think Topsy Turvy is that catering to children. I mean, it's a festival. It's supposed to be more fun and upbeat. I will agree though that the marketing of the movie was overall misleading. Like a good 80 percent of the trailers focused on the Festival of Fools and made the movie look like it would be some kind of romantic comedy.
@linkfan160
6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Frankly, A Guy like You feels more like a scene/song number that should have been a deleted scene rather than a completed part that they put in the finished movie. It doesn't go with the rest of the film at all. Topsy Turvy at least has a bit of that Medieval, European flair going on with it and still feels like it could be part of that story space. Honestly I don't blame Disney for the way they marketed this film. If they had shown clips from the Hellfire scene or one of the darker moments in general, parents would have found it questionable and wouldn't have allowed their kids to see it. So imagine their faces when they got into the theater and realized what kind of movie this really was. How did they try to explain the themes of religion, racism, lust and genocide to their children? It was probably a very interesting time to be a Disney fan.

Celebrated during 6th January (coinciding with the old pre-Vatican II date of the Feast of the Epiphany/Three Kings), one of the highlights was the crowning of the "Pope of Fools" (as described in the novel). Miss Clavel encourages her students to read books, but when she accidentally picks up a Disney signature of the said episode title & starts at the Feast of Fools, she is surprised by Hugo who brings them into the Walt Disney adaption to play in the tipsy turvy tournament

From France : alan menken, the creator of this soundtrack's masterpiece is a pure genius...a Walt Disney's soundtrack almost entirely in latin !!! imagine that today !!!...i am listening to this masterpiece since it was avalaible in CD...even, and of course, marching in front of Notre Dame... Thanks to the world and thanks to you, everyone "out there" for helping Notre Dame continuing to be Eternal !

2:10 what could Disney know of 6th of January! 😱 This film was released in 1996!!! Makes you wonder what else is coded in these films apart from the obvious.

It is something known as a coincidence. Every single day possible has some significance if you look deep enough.

Imagine being asked to play an instrument for a song by Disney that's going to be on Theatres, just for it to be the kazoo.

YALL DONT UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS SONG. This is the most beautiful thing I ever heard ever since I was a baby, my toes are curling, my eyes are watering, my teeth are biting my nails, I'm shaking on how this is possible to sound this AMAZING, my skin is crawling as the voice crawls up through my skin and chills, my body is shaking so much as I rise up to heaven while listening to this gorgeous piece of a song, nothing will ever beat this toe curing, blood wrenching, skin crawling, eye sweating, hand shaking song though I'm listening this at night night, supposed to be asleep rn.

The part where the crowd goes "TOPSY TURVEY!" reminds me of the Can Can song.

I still think of the computer game that came out for Hunchback of Notre Dame The Feast of Fools . You were able to throw paint splats? Tomatoes?
