18:48 That’s Jenna Malone, she plays Johanna Mason. She won the 71st games, her strategy from the moment she was reaped was to appear as feeble and weak as possible, she intentionally made herself get a score of 3 for the individual training scores and when it was her a only a few tributes left she surprised everyone with how ruthless she was and how skilled she was with an axe.

If you think making past victors fight in the Games again, for the first Quell, the districts had to vote which tributes to send to the games. I think you misunderstood what the Gamemaker and Snow said about Katniss before the Games - Snow said "as long as it ends with her picture in the sky and the sound of cannons" which is what happens when a Tribute is KILLED. Snow was saying he definitely wanted Katniss *dead* by the end of the Games - he wanted the Gamemaker to essentially rig the Game and *ensure* that Katniss didn't win again. In the book, Katniss was so upset after the Reaping because she had not yet told her family that she intended to die in the games in order to protect them. Once she left for the games she really embraced the relationship with Peeta. The book really expands on that so it’s less of a surprise that Katniss develops real feelings for Peeta.
@carmenmintrose

Enjoyed your reaction :) I'm glad you caught that the kiss by the beach felt more real or the "kissiest kiss" in your words haha. In the books, it was clear that aside from like one kiss in the cave back in the first games, this is the first time she ever felt anything more despite kissing him a thousand times already. I think you mentioned that you plan read the books (would love to see you reaction to those!) but if I may share a small snippet from that kiss scene: "The sensation inside me grows warmer and spreads out from my chest, down through my body, out along my arms and legs, to the tips of my being. Instead of satisfying me, the kisses have the opposite effect, of making my need greater. I thought I was something of an expert on hunger, but this is an entirely new kind." You are right that they do grow closer as time goes on esp because they are the only ones who can truly understand how the other person feels, as the only ones who went through the same Games together and all that BS. Def grounds for some trauma bonding lol. But also, to Katniss, Peeta represents hope and peace, he is her dandelion in the spring. Whereas Gale represents anger and fire, and you see that in him - the way he chose to stay and fight, and how he intervened with the Peacekeepers. It's funny that people hated Gale bc he's "boring"... he's not, imo he's a really complex character, but one that was def written as a direct foil to Peeta and isn't meant to be well liked. Btw, Cinna being beat up before Katniss enters the Games was def intentional; Snow was trying to fuck her up and throw her off so that she would be more disoriented and less likely to do well. But it was also because Cinna pretty much sacrificed himself by making the mockingjay outfit to make a statement, directly associating himself with the symbol of the rebellion. Anyways, I've rambled on enough about all this hahaha, but hope this help provided some more insight. Looking forward to your reaction to the next two movies (and hopefully The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes?!)

It may be completely unintentional, but the stable camerawork in this film sort of reflects how everyone is somehow more "stable" as well. Katniss had a clear plan in her mind to protect Peeta, and Haymitch and the other tributes also had their own plans brewing. The frantic camerawork in the first film now reflects how clueless everyone was going into that arena and being thrust into utter chaos.

you asked what the lady was in the background with the mask on. She is an Avox, in the books you get a lot more context. Theyre basically prisoners who get their tongues cut out and have to serve the tributes. In the first book Katniss recognized one of them from when she was hunting with gale and they saw a girl who was running away from another district, she was with a boy who got impaled and killed from a capitol hovercraft and they picked up the girl and turned her into a tongueless servant. In catching fire one of the peacekeepers that was always kind to Katniss was a new avox along with the old one. Snow did this to psych her out for the second games.

Hey, new to your channel w/the 1st Hunger Games. This is my 1st time commenting. I mostly enjoyed your reaction to this movie. The thing that kinda threw me was u saying that President Snow & Plutarch Heavensbee wanted Katniss to win. I was like "Wait, what?! Did we watch the same scene?" I tried to think back on whether/not u were talking during that scene, & maybe that was why u misunderstood it. Anyway, getting back to the movie, CATCHING FIRE is most people's favorite, including mine. U mentioned your surprise @ how many Gale haters there were. I am amongst them, but in my case "hate" might be too strong a word. I mean, he has some admirable qualities, like fighting against injustice, trying to protect others, hard working & brave, but the negatives out weigh the positives, IMO. I love Prim & Peeta for their kind & loving ways. I also like our little rebel, Katniss. Before I forget, I wanted to mention something about the 1st movie/book that lends to this movie. I don't know if u have even started the books, but I have to say this. In the 1st book, Katniss doesn't know how she feels about either of the boys because she's constantly in survival mode. Right before the 1st Reaping, Gale kinda hints @ wanting to be her boyfriend. I think he does this because it's his last Reaping. Katniss thought he was being weird & she felt a bit uncomfortable. She only thought of Gale as her best friend & hunting buddy. @ that time before she volunteers for Prim, she still had possibly 2 more Reapings to attend so couldn't be making plans for the future that may never come. Now, in CATCHING FIRE, Gale asked Katniss. "Do u love me?" Katniss goes silent for a couple of seconds, & then said "Gale, u know how I feel about u." Umm, apparently he doesn't or else he wouldn't have asked. Ok, let's talk about Peeta. The boy has it bad for Katniss. During their time in the 1st Hunger Games, Katniss played along w/the whole "star-crossed lovers" scenario still unsure if Peeta's feelings were genuine. But, by the end of their time in the cave & they shared that last kiss, Katniss realized something had shifted & she felt something more for him. But, in true Katniss fashion, she stamped down her rising feelings by telling herself Peeta was also just pretending to survive. So, what I'm saying is she had feelings for Peeta in their 1st Hunger Games. That's why after they share that long & meaningful kiss in CATCHING FIRE & u said something like "I still think she just thinks of him as a friend or close friend..." I was like 🙄. That was when she realized she had real feelings for him. Anyway, that's all I wanted to say about that. Jennifer Lawrence does a phenomenal job in all 4 movies. Love Jenna Malone's portrayal of "Spitfire" Johanna.😊 Hey, when she was stripping in the elevator, it was for 2 reasons. 1. She hated her outfit & wanted it off of her, & 2. She's not the least bit intimidated by anyone/anything. I mean, if u got it, flaunt it.😄 When u were struggling to remember the actress' name, I started talking @ my screen as if u could hear me, "Jenna Malone!" 😄 The 1st movie I ever saw her in was BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA adapted from a book of the same name, which I have read. She was about 11 yrs old when they filmed it, even then she proved to be a great actress. Ok, I'm sorry I ran so long w/my comments. I really did enjoy your reaction.😊👍

In the first movie, the bread scene from the past is never properly explained and it's a shame because I think it's important to understand Katniss and Peeta's relationship. Basically, at that time, Katniss' father had just died, her mother was in a severe depression and unable to take care of them and she was still too young to apply for more food (since they can only do in exchange of putting their name more times for the reaping) so they were literally dying of hunger. Peeta saw her and intentionally burned a very expensive bread (only the peacekeepers or people with money could afford It) just to give it to her (and he got a serious beating by his mother for it, showing up at school all bruised up the next day). She got strenght for that and the resolve to start hunting and, therefore she survived. From then on, for Katniss, Peeta was a symbol of hope and everything that was good in the world. That's why she wants so badly for him to survived and that's why, at this stage, she does have feeling for Peeta, she just hasn't realized It yet because she's traumatized and doesn't have headspace for that, just as she told Gale. Cinna was doomed from the moment he did they dress design, since the mockingjay was already the symbol of the Revolution. He was aware and still did It. It's still true that they beat him at that moment because they wanted to affect Katniss. This leads us to the fact that Snow wanted Katniss dead from the begining but he had one problem: how to kill her without making her a martyr of the Revolution. The thing about the games is that It was a way to pit district against district so they wouldn't turn on the Capitol and Katniss sparked the rebellion by showing compassion not only with Rue, but by giving Cato a mercyful dead (in the books this is even more significant since Peeta's leg wound isn't as healed as in the movie and they made a tourniquet with one of Katniss' arrows. At the moment of Cato's death, it's the only arrow they have left and they still use It, which results in Peeta actually loosing that leg). That's why Snow IS so despertate to make her look bad. He wants people to believe that she's just interested in her own survival and that's what Plutarch keeps using to delay her killing (like: "yeah let's kill her but at the right moment, when she has turned against her allies") so that they can save her. That's also why Haymitch (and later Finnick) tells her to "remember who the real enemy is". Phew, sorry, that was a really long comment, but I'm quite passionate about this. (Also, sorry if there are mistakes. English is my second language and I always type too fast on the phone) If you like reading, I'd still recommend reading the books. I think Suzanne Collins did an AMAZING job interwining social and political commentary for younger audiences into the plot 🥰

For the 25th Anniversary Quarter Quell the capital had the districts vote for their tributes. For the 50th Anniversary Quarter Quell they did double the amount of participants so 48 tributes and that’s the game Haymitch won. There’s a chapter in the book I THINK Peeta and Katniss just straight up watch clips of his game. Haymitch figures out the force field around the arena and when he’s on the verge of death uses the force field to get the kill on the final other tribute. The capital was angry because the force field wasn’t supposed to be known about or used like that so they had Haymitch’s family killed. That on top of having to mentor 2 tributes who all end up dead for 23 years straight, alone too because he was the only District 12 victor, it makes sense why he became an alcoholic and why he knew the capital wouldn’t be happy with how peeta and Katniss won their games and why he was telling them to act extremely grateful and in love

I have been a big fan of Jena Malone for many, many years. First time I saw her act was in the movie Contact; she played Jodie Foster's character as a child. I have enjoyed watching her journey through the films she has been in and the varied characters she has played. I love the character of Cinna; I am not too familiar with the music of Lenny Kravitz, but I thoroughly loved his portrayal of Cinna. I also share the same birthday as Lenny Kravitz. That ending shot with the expression on the face of Katniss was awesome. Let the rebellion begin.

Jena Malone also played on of the flighty Bennett sisters (Lydia) in Pride and Prejudice - the 2005 version with Kiera Knightly as Elizabeth and Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennett, a lovely contrast to his portrayal of Snow in the Hunger Games.

So it’s not explained in the movies but Mockingjays are a hybrid of jabber jays and mockingbirds created by the capital to spy on the districts while they worked and went about their days. The people in the districts quickly caught on and began feeding the mockingjays false information. It is seen as a symbol of rebellion because the capital failing at anything undermines their strict authority over the districts. Cinna was brilliant for capitalizing on that when he saw her pin, even when he knew it would cost his life. Also throughout the entirety of these first two books Cinna keeps Katniss’ hair in a braid or two because she’s 16 and he understands how the capital works so he wants to preserve her youth as much as possible. The braid becomes a symbol for Katniss. There is one part (might’ve been for the wedding dress) where he makes Katniss wear bra stuffing and she hates it but he does it to satisfy the capital out of necessity. Cinna understands how the people of the capital are, and it was hinted at that people were already discussing permanent body modification for Katniss.

By the way the guy who plays finnick yes he's attractive but he wasn't nearly as attractive as he was supposed to be one thing they said about him that was supposed to be something that was very attractive about him was the seafoam green eyes and the fact that he was a very sexually attractive person who survived the games that was really not to his advantage because will you seen Mockingjay you know what they did to him in the capitol and I know I've only seen you react to things in this series but based on the personality I've seen so far I'm going to say like everyone else you are going to feel bad for feelings you had about him early on f****** just about everyone feels that way Also I will tell you A lot of people at this point don't get why so many people in the comments don't like Gail you see I understand that he was very close to katniss he had feelings for her she didn't share he was hurt that she suddenly getting those sort of feelings for Peeta or at least has to pretend to he's hurt and whatever it's not exactly unreasonable but it's you know not unreasonable that he would feel some type of way about that but kind of unreasonable that he would expect dare to be something between him and her because he knows that she's really not allowing herself to have those kind of feelings but he's kind of hurt that she's kind of pretending with Peeta and then you know you know how things develop between them they look after each other's families is kind of extra insurance that they'll be okay and he's always been about fighting back against the capitol he didn't see coming with coin was I feel like he definitely didn't mean to do anything to hurt her family he loves her family like she loves his family that they feel like an extension of each other's families but you know what happened and that he was partly responsible notice nobody even kind of blamed Beetee for his part in it cuz he was never someone who knew her family like that he wasn't district 12 he wasn't in like that with them she didn't trust him like that she just got a good vibe from him going into the 75th hunger games he's not a bad guy very very intelligent the wrong person was using that brain

Yeah Joanna is an odd one to say the least and yeah this girl did a fantastic job playing her but there was a lot more to her in the books but they pretty much did the job of explaining what she was like in this movie but there was a lot they left out to her character building in the Mockingjay movies I don't know if you've already watched the first one and just haven't gotten it edited yet or what but let's just say she has some trauma from the capital and it goes a lot deeper than what they show in the movie she was to the point she was terrified of water she wouldn't shower or wash her hair or anything she was completely traumatized when they had hold of her and even if you haven't watched the first Mockingjay you know that they had her and Peeta and basically any of the survivors who weren't on that ship going to 13 we're taken from the arena by the capital and let's just say they weren't treated kindly... Okay I just clicked on your patreon link to see if you've posted anything about watching any part of the Mockingjay yet you've already seen it so you know what they did in the capital to peeta they did very similar things to her they said they were familiar with each other screams the reason she was so fearful of water is they like to shock her they use electricity in her torture

The thing with the bodies wasn't really shown in the first movie but basically that happens because there was a guy who was cannibalizing the dead bodies in one of the earlier games so they started scooping up the Dead Also since you mentioned Johanna Mason being in a lot of things and being a child actor I googled her to see if I had seen her in anything I'd actually heard a whole lot of things she was in but I hadn't actually seen any of it and I also saw an article saying that she said she was sexually assaulted on the set of one of The hunger game movies she wouldn't say who did it because she's already healed and it's not like he would be prosecuted anyway I feel like it's still in her best interest or at least the best interests of anyone working with him going forward to know who it is she didn't even say if it was anyone from this movie or one of the people from the Mockingjay movies there's a lot of different men she worked with in this franchise and is it somebody she even shared screen time with we don't know wizard somebody she was on screen with a lot was it somebody who was just an extra backstage was it somebody who didn't even work on camera I'm kind of disturbed that she didn't say who it was

About Gail at the whipping post the actual whipping was pretty similar in the book the reason was not the reason in the book was less heroic he didn't witness the new peacekeeper attacking an old woman and decided to hit him with a WWE style spear what he did instead was he went to the Head peacekeepers house who was a customer of his his favorite meat was turkey and he had just killed one and was taking it there fresh like it was not even cold yet he was expecting to be paid handsomely for his kill what happened however was he didn't realize the head peacekeeper had been replaced play this new hard ass who had now caught him red-handed with meat that he had poached from outside of the district fence so he was going to make a example out of him multiple people had come up to tell him that they don't kill people for this crime they just get a certain number of lashes the boy is already unconscious that's enough you don't want to kill him and he proceeded to knock out multiple people for saying that including other peacekeepers also it wasn't really explained in the movie why some of the victors were behaving so oddly around katniss it's because they can sense her innocence because in the arena in the games when she and Peter are 16 she was very uncomfortable when he had to be stripped to clean the wounds she didn't want to look she was very uncomfortable she never seen a naked guy before and when Gail was on her table bleeding heavily and her sister who was basically nursing him and not caring that he was essentially naked katniss did she was very uncomfortable with that and there's a reason why she doesn't really think of anyone in a romantic fashion it's not that she's asexual and incapable of being attracted to someone physically she just doesn't have time for the shenanigans she doesn't want to ever get married and have kids bringing more kids into poverty and possible sacrifice to the capital she's more focused on keeping her little sister fed and safe but basically all the boys who know her crush on her she has affection for them but not in the way they do for her cuz she can't let herself have those sort of feelings she has love for them but not in the way they do for her

Also I got to say if you're a child who's of the age you would normally be in the big fish bowl to be drafted to death that cast to make you feel like you won the lottery the fact that none of you little f****** will be in there this year by the way Gail was a 18 last year so he's not eligible this year even if it wasn't former victors but Peeta and katniss are literally 17 they are still legally children only in the Harry Potter world would they be considered adults at this point!

Definitely the best book and easily, the best film of the series. Everything here (from a production standpoint) was done so much better than the previous film (which I also liked). It was partly shot in IMAX and I got to see it theatrically in that format which was a great experience. Looking forward to your Mockingjay reactions. Take care and best wishes. ~ KJ

When I learn the "rules" of a story, my brain latches on to that as accepted fact. So, I too interpreted all of Katniss's affection towards Peeta as platonic, since she clearly wanted to be with Gael and not Peeta from the beginning. So, when fans started the whole discussion around the Edward-Jacob style love triangle, I was so confused, since it seemed like Katniss had already made her choice from the beginning of the series. Any mention of what Peeta's done for her or of Gael being boring or selfish mad me think "It doesn't what you think, because Katniss made her decision." Obviously, things change for Katniss throughout the series (and I hear this is all done better in the books), but saying that K & P didn't have any romantic chemistry in this movie makes me go "Thank you!"
