I was determined to finally beat my pb of 28.8 lbs, This wasn't going to be easy.
But where do I start? I knew I needed to find a lake that hosted carp over 30lb, but I also wanted to choose one local to me, as during this challenge, I decided to catch my biggest fish during a day session. I know what you're thinking, I need to be doing a night session to give myself a better chance. Unfortunately this wasn't an option, so I had to do everything I can to complete the challenge.
My first lake of choice was Ashlyns. With it being 4 acres in size, and known for holding carp well over 30lbs, I know I was in the right place. I had a good session here with Ben from Parker Baits last month, and managed to pull out a 22lb Nosser. I've been looking forward to this session, and decided to turn up at the lake early to give me the best chance of catching my PB.
I wanted to use a different approach on this lake, so I went with a new bait, 12 ml pellet with around 20 maggots on top of it.
As I was talking to you about the rig I was using, I noticed a fish bosh right where I casted out. I was hopeful that this was the fish that would set my alarm off. My dad came along to the session with me, and he had a fish bosh on top of his line too. We could see so many fish in these waters, I'm not sure why we weren't catching straight away. It's an odd lake, you can be on the fish, and almost guarantee a catch, but often they are very picky on what they like to eat.
Just as I started to feel as though I wasn't going to catch this session, my alarm went off, hopefully this wasn't a bream.
Finally! The First fish of the session! And what a beautiful carp it was! My confidence in this session was sky high now after that catch, nowhere near a 30 pound carp. But I was really happy with a great start.
Not long after my catch, my dad was fish on too! This session is looking more hopeful now!
After seeing that fish that looked easily over 30lbs, my heart was set on bringing him out of the water.
I put the rod back out to the far bank, using the same bait, hoping to catch the 30 pounder that I know is swimming around.
Another angler on the other side of the lake has been catching close to the island, so I thought it was a good idea to cast 2 of our rods by the island.
I left a rod out on the same spot as my last catch as I knew there were a few carp still in that area. Not long after casting my rod out into that position, with the same bait attached to my hook, I was fish on again!
The session was coming to an end, it's been a good day at Ashlyns. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get anything over 30lb out of the lake, but I managed to pull out a few carp, and my dad managed a 24 pounder. The lake was beautiful, I love this place to bits! I've spent a lot of time at this lake, and always look forward to when I can get down here. You will definitely see this lake a lot more on this channel.
After the session at Ashlyns, I searched online for several lakes in my area that stock over 30 pound carp. I found a lake not far from me called Fennes Fishery. The full session can be found on my channel.
The biggest carp in this lake is 32.4, so this is the fish I'm targeting here. I was the only one on this lake, probably because the forecast was set for rain and thunderstorms, but nothing was going to stop me from catching my PB. I wanted to maximise my chances of catching him, so obviously, I went with the best bait on the market. Parker Baits OG fish and fruit and nut. Throwing that into a solid bag with the flat spot, these fish won't know wants coming.
Within a few minutes of putting my rods out, I had a fish on.
After seeing loads of fish in the swim on the other side of the lake, I wanted to set up there. I knew the 30 pounder was over there somewhere.
I was feeling a lot more hopeful in this swim, I kept seeing so much activity here. I knew that it wouldn't be long until I got another one hooked.
While casting in one fish, my other rod that was positioned right on top of where I saw the fish, started to go off. Two fish at the same time, was one going to be the 32.4 mirror?
Unfortunately, one of them was a bream, but my other rod hosted a really beautiful carp. Weighing in at around 10 pounds, I was still far off catching anything over 30 pounds.
Just as the session was coming to a close, and the rain and er looked closer than ever to coming
