Solo games like this require a heavy dose of "Theater of the Mind." I always enjoy your reviews.

Historically, only 1 in 4 U boats survived. The captains were told where to go and they basically only decided what targets to go for. In the early part of the war they had excellent chances of taking ships down, but later in the war (represented by this game), the allies had figured out how to successfully hunt and defend against the U boats. It was common for a patrol to last 3 to 6 months (though some were over in 3 weeks), so 'upgrading' was usually a slow process (except for the crew) as the sub had to get back to a friendly port, and even then, these would go to the most successful captains. I understand you may not have enjoyed the game as much as one that moves quicker without charts, but I think it does a fairly good job of presenting a realistic simulation in board game form for 1 player. U-Boot is another board game that plays as a RTS, but that game is best with 4 players. There is too much to do (since the clock is ticking) for 1 (or even 2) players. Aces of the Deep is an older computer game, but this is also an excellent simulation for solo play.

Excellent points! I think the game is WONDERFUL as a simulation of the realities and stresses of this part of the war. I just didn't gain as much enjoyment as I would have hoped from it as a game, if that makes sense.

One Stop Co-op Shop I totally understand your point when presenting your cons for the game, but I think that your opinion is heavily based on the merits of the game mechanics from the point of view of a more “Ameritrash” coop and solo gamer. The real enjoyment that the usual war-gamer gets from this game is the historical simulation. People who usually play this game family (The Hunters, B17, Silent Victory etc ) are fans of the historical background, having read many books on the subject. The game’s narrative story creates for them a thematic immersion like no other. It is true that it’s based on a lot of tables, modifiers, and a lack of control of the fate of your u-boat. I think that this is more a story driven simulation than a “game” in the sense of the word. So the only point I think you miss a little bit in your review was of the development of a great themes for fans of the subject. Don’t get me wrong your reviews was very objective and well done. The game just didn’t appeal to you because you are obviously not an enthusiast of the war in the Atlantic theme.

@@OneStopCoopShop It totally makes sense. This kind of games feel as if chance is guiding the game. But for wargamers is a favorite type of game, because of the narrative. Thanks for your great channel.

@@OneStopCoopShop I do, thanks a lot. There are the perfect length to find out the main points, highs and lows and not have somebody babbling on or doing lame sketch comedy like some of the other reviewers. I also appreciate that it's not in the usual intro/rules/thoughts format. I can watch your quick review and if it sounds good, I can watch your playthroughs or find a rules video. I'm getting to the point where I only want to watch you guys and Rodney. Keep up the good work!!

Yeah Michael, I get it! This game’s not for everyone. Great review again! You speak to why this game is not really for you and some others, and that’s totally OK. I always appreciate honest, opinions and reviews!! You do that. As I always say.... you keep doing you, man!

Great review! I started out as a wargamer and broadened my 'portfolio' later, so I enjoy a largely deterministic game like this...but even for me, it can lose its appeal over time.

Hi Mike, great review as always, and I do agree with the lack of decisions and having to look at tables a lot can sometimes be an issue for me. I wonder after playing it more often you may not need to look at the tables so often. Also you didn't want to use the world map because the simple track on the submarine was quicker, but do you think that made you loose out of some of the story elements you could have 'made up' while playing? To help further there are thematic sheet you can print on BGG showing the submarine layout and different damage parts etc. Just thought I'd mention it :D

I used the maps in my personal plays. Just used the sub board in the video to make it easier to film ;) I did memorize the more common DRMs, but regardless it’s a design philosophy that I personally don’t enjoy. I’d rather have a small number of factors that matter consistently, you know? Like I said in the review, I fully expect many people to love this game. I might even be the minority, but after my 6 full careers or so I was pretty much done.

You may not agree but uBoot has a app to take care of all the cons, live periscope views, it controls all the enemy attacks on your sub, I played on table top simulator with the app and was blown away by the realism the game brings to you, you should watch the game trailer, your son would love it

Totally different type of game you have masses of decisions and you really do feel like death is upon you in every battle, you work out on charts where you are where your going etc, you move miniatures on the sub to their actual stations and you better get it right lol.

Gah, I’m an idiot. I’ve played U Boot with Steve from the podcast. Definitely cool for the components, and the greater number of choices.
