"Want some free advice?" "How much will it cost?" - one of the best lines from any movie.

If this movie were filmed in color it would be very good--the black and white makes it a masterpiece!!

Michael Constantine nailed this scene. I have not seen quality acting like this from any movie produced in the past 30 years. Damn, I felt like I was actually in a 1961 city pool hall. Loved the cigar bit. That was common for a guy like him in a place like this.

Yes and no. You are correct in that Fats was born in NYC. He moved away as a young adult and did most of his hustling throughout the Midwest. In the early days before the 1960s pool was extremely popular. Pool halls everywhere you looked in every city. I would not say that NYC was the mecca of pool, but I'm glad you mentioned it. Since Fats was also called "Minnesota Fats," I had mistanly thought he was raised in Minnesota. Your post corrected me. I can assure you that Cleveland, Chicago. etc had unbelievably good pool players. NYC had no monopoly on that. NYC is the most popular city in the world, no doubt.

Be careful. A stranger will purposely play bad in the beginning. But he is sucking you in for a big bet. So, watching someone does not always help.

Was it morning or noonish when they rolled into the joint? I can't remember. Shit I'm gonna have to watch it now. But I thought that was interesting someone telling him when Fats came in to start his night. I just show up around 9 and find out who's shown up to play.
