Mike, you're always such a blast to listen to. I've always treasured your contributions to music, and also your taste in music, your struggle with OCD (something I also contend with), and just your delightful outlook on life. This track brings me back to early 2002. Argentina, my country, was going through the worst crisis in its history (so far), and I was a 17-year-old in his first year of Uni. A dear friend used to drive me every morning, and we played our favorite CDs on the car stereo - which insisted on skipping every time we hit a bump. Long story short, he put Images and Words on, and it was SUCH a tastemaking record for me! From then, it was a short road to the rest of DT's discography, and it wasn't long until SDOIT came out - which was also instrumental for me getting into Tool. Love ya, Mike, always will!

I hope they thought that since the band is 40 in 2025 - they wanted to do one more album and tour with the "classic" line up and asked Mangini if he would agree to step down .. and din't just flat out sack him.

I really like Mike's knowledge and he's playing - but there are way other many drummers out there - just have never ever understood why so many people are saying he's the best, the only one etc. Yes, he's really a good one, but I wouldn't put him higher than any other great drummers...
@Draugheim
9 ай бұрын
@@belanagy5595 Because he's just as much a musician as he is a drummer. He made/makes incredible drum parts that not only follow the songs but adds to it. Sometimes it feels like the drums are the center of the songs, where normally vocals or guitars are. In the best way possible. He also has a fantastic groove thats consistent through it all, no matter how technical it gets etc. What i also liked about portnoy is that he was a metalhead first. And since he was a founding member and had a say in everything they did it always felt like a metalband underneath all the other genres they flirt with. They kind of lost this when he quit. But theres another very important thing about portnoy, that they lost back when he quit: his showmanship. He was the face and charisma of the band. Their show (and interviews and whatnot) was so much more entertaining just because he brought that.. Energy to the stage.

For those who don't already know and didn't notice it. Mike always plays with just his left stick backwards. He likes the more full and heavy sound you get on the snare. He uses his signature black sticks with white tips, which makes it a bit easier to see.
@Celari

He also does stick swirls to switch it up mid beat occasionally depending on what type of sound he wants.
@closinginonclosure
9 ай бұрын
@@Celari Yep, and it's very purposeful and intentional. Meaning it not something he just randomly does on a whim. He'll do it specifically for certain part of certain songs, and do it consistently, every time he plays the song. You could liken it to a painter who was painting and entire object with standard blue, and then switches to a different blue that's barely a shade different, just to add one small detail that the lamen may not even notice or pick out. It's that artistry and attention to detail that are just a couple of the qualities that make Portnoy one of the GOATS behind a kit. He's a true pro with a vast toolbox. Always a pleasure to watch him play. Makes it look like tying a pair if shoes every time.

@@kooijbasYep, he's been doing it for as long as I remember. 5:49 is just one example. He switches to standard grip just for the single crash, so it sounds brighter. Does one hit of the snare after, as he didn't have the time to switch his stick back first, but immediately reverts back to backwards stick between beats. From time to time he will to stick spins for show that aren't functional and he's just into his playing and having fun. But most are functional and it's him switching the stick position. Especially when it's with his left hand.

Mike Mangini is amazing. Saw him live with DT for the last time this year. Yet words cannot express how excited I am to see Mike Portnoy back. Mike Portnoy is DT itself.

Just soaking in the talents and words of a legend. Your band changed my life almost 25 years ago. Back then I was a member of this website called mysongbook, powered by guitar pro, and so I first heard your songs in tablature midi playback! I figured, holy shit... an actual band plays this stuff? I gotta hear it for myself. And boy, when I did... my thirteen year old self was made a fan for life. Legend has it, I'm still in awe to this day. Great work, drumeo.

LONG overdue. I also love how he does his live version of the song, which is slightly embellished from the studio version without losing any of the feel or momentum. You don't find many drummers in the world quite like Portnoy. It shows even in this, one of DT's more straightforward tracks. Much love Mike. Big fan since 1994.

I started playing drums some 25 years ago due to this dude, and while I never made it as a drummer, I don't regret a second of it. Thanks Mike for everything, so happy you're back. And thanks Drumeo for this amazing production. Looking forward to watching a few more DT tracks just like this one 🙏

Mike has always been my favorite drummer. He brings such passion and an organic feel to anything he plays on. I never feel like anything he plays is superflous, and always serves the songs really well. Such a rare combination of taste, creativity, skill and passion. So happy to seem him back with DT, and can't wait to see what they come up with next!

It is IMPOSSIBLE not to smile seeing this video. Dream Theater was magical because it was not just immensely technical, but because it was ALSO insanely rock n' roll. And Portnoy always embodied this rock n' roll soul. Mangini is a beast, but this happiness that you can see in Portnoy's playing is unmatched. Really, really good video.

Portnoy is such a musical drummer! He plays the song! I love it. Welcome back Mike P. (God bless Mangini too, second best drummer in the world named Mike is still a phenomenal accomplishment!) Thirty years in to my fandom and the flame is rekindled.

I met Mike Portnoy right as Images and Words was released. They played at a club called "Network" in Washington DC. Fates Warning was also playing that night and Mike went on the floor are played a pinball machine right next to me as I talked to him for about 10 min!!! This was right before they took off and Mike Portnoy became "Mile Portnoy!" I will never forget that night! Dude was soooo cool and totally normal in every way. No ego whatsoever!!!

Then immediately buying Awake and listening to the entire album. Then finding Falling Into Infinity and solidifying my eternal love for Dream Theater. ❤

Love that Portnoy is back in Dream Theater. No disrespect to Mangini, but Portnoy's fills are very fluid while Mangini feels very technical. Both exceptional drummers in their own right!

It's definitely the song that started my DT journey. I got Images & Words for Christmas from a relative who had no idea what my musical tastes were. I also got some kind of flight simulator for the family PC. The album really cracked my head open as to what music could be, and I had it on repeat for endless hours of flying over badly simulated landscapes. Pull me Under still takes me back to that sense of freedom and speed, zooming around and seeing the world spinning below me just like in the song.

After years of the evolution this song went through, it's so weird seeing MP playing the drum parts identical to the studio recording. Can't wait to see him go wild with it on tour again!
