I remember reading this story in a UK newspaper many years ago, and being engrossed by it's eloquence. It must of been the height of the Reagan/Thatcher cold war max out, when everyone was paranoid. But thanks Martin, for a great yarn. It reminds me of first reading the Valley of the blind.

I like the way they epic events and huge catastrophes are discussed and described in a matter-of-fact way, with an easy laid-back American accent.

As a life-long Amis fan I have nearly all his books .. but this dull stuff, did he really write it? .. it has none of his panache .. maybe he was ill or depressed .. maybe it's a pastiche by someone else .. or it could be the lifeless rendition ..
