WSO delved into the archives to find footage of how 1984 impacted the lives of Canadian Sikhs. The clip showcases the Gakhal family and the difficulties of living in Canada due to violent incidents that occurred in Punjab 1984.
Due to the rampant racism and in order to fit in, Hardev Singh Gakhal cut his hair. He said the day he went to the barber was so tough and that he almost cried since he felt like he was betraying his father. However, the events of 1984 gave him a chance to reconnect with Sikhi, regrowing his hair, feeling he had to represent and stand against the injustice shown against Sikhs.
