Welcome to @HealthyKidneyInc! In today's video I will discussing the role Vitamin K plays in preventing severe complications in Chronic Kidney Disease patients.
Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in some foods and is available as a dietary supplement. Vitamin K is present in various organs such as the liver, brain, heart, pancreas, and bones. It helps to make various proteins that are needed for blood clotting and the building of bones.
Individuals suffering from chronic kidney disease face a heightened risk of developing vascular calcification and bone fractures. These complications significantly contribute to the elevated morbidity and mortality rates among CKD patients. Numerous studies have indicated that vitamin K2 might play a pivotal role in the prevention of these complications.
Phylloquinone (Vitamin K1) is present primarily in green leafy vegetables like collard greens and kale, and is the main dietary form of vitamin K. On the other hands, a series of menaquinones (Vitamin K2), is found in some animal foods and fermented foods, like Kimchi. Menaquinones can also be produced by bacteria in the human body.
Vitamin K undergoes rapid breakdown and is eliminated from the body through urine or stool. Due to this efficient elimination process, it rarely reaches toxic levels in the body even with high intakes, as may sometimes occur with other fat-soluble vitamins.
