I love Joan's performance. She seems so natural in this role.

Joan did a good job at making Lady Bracknell human and realistic rather than playing it purely for laughs. Of course nobody can escape the shadow of the great Dame Edith, but a worthy performance.

I agree completely about Plowright making Lady B. human and realistic. Also, her performance is meticulously scaled for the TV cameras, and she wisely is sparing in her use of that awesome cannon of a voice (which I had the pleasure to hear live in London, in Shaw's Mrs. Warren's Profession).

Joan Plowright looks very much like my late grandma; she died when I was 12. I always think of her whenever I watch anything with Joan Plowright.

With her round dark eyes Joan is very good at that slightly stunned expression when she hears that he was found. She looks as if she had gone deaf from shock for a moment, at 6:14.

An intelligent actress. She had the sense to learn from Edith Evans without aping her. The humourless Dench disastrously relied on her own meagre talent.

A good second to the inimitable Dame Edith Evans' immortal performance...far superior to others (for ex Judy Dench, David Suchet)

The 1952 film cast (including Edith Evans, Joan Greenwood, and Dorothy Tutin) can't be improved upon, but Joan Plowright really is awfully good in this one.

Here is an except: (0:52) Lady Brrrracknell: Mr. Worthing!! Rrrrise, sir, from this semi-recumbent posture! It is _most_ indecorous! Gwendolen: Mamma! [He tries to rise; she restrains him.] I must beg you to retire. This is no place for you. Besides, Mr. Worthing has not quite finished yet. Lady Brrrracknell: Finished _what_, may I ask!? Gwendolen: I am engaged to Mr. Worthing, mamma. [They rise together.] Lady Brrrracknell: Pardon me, you are not engaged to any one. When you _do_ become engaged to some one, I, or your father, should his health permit him, will inform you of the fact. An engagement should come on a young girl as a surprise, pleasant or unpleasant, as the case may be. It is hardly a matter that she could be allowed to arrange for herself . . . And now I have a few questions to put to you, Mr. Worthing. While I am making these inquiries, you, Gwendolen, will wait for me below in the carriage. Gwendolen. [Reprrrroachfully.] Mamma! Lady Bracknell: In the carriage, Gwendolen! [Gwendolen goes to the door. She and Jack blow kisses to each other behind Lady Bracknell's back. Lady Bracknell looks vaguely about as if she could not understand what the noise was. Finally turns round.] Gwendolen, the carriage! Gwendolen: Yes, mamma. [Goes out, looking back at Jack.]

Thanks for posting - so far, I think this is the best filmed version of the play I have sign. True Joan Plowright cannot equal Dame Edith Evans especially in her delivery of 'A HANDBAG?' but the other characters are acted in a much livelier but at the same time authentic manner than in 1952 version (rather staid and dull; too reverential) or the 2002 version (pretty frivolous and strays too much from the spirit of the play).
