@shawnmatthewcrawford

I agree, especially when you’re playing live. A lot of ghost notes are too quiet to be picked up by the live mix. So you might be playing intricate ghost notes all over the place but the audience only hears the 2 and 4. For recording and certain gigs they’re amazing and add a ton of feel to the groove. Sometimes when I play live I will play the ghost notes loud if it’s a main part of the recording on the record.

Sometimes it's not all about what you hear, it's what you feel. Don't underestimate the crowd, if you play it right and the audio-engineer has mic'd up the kit right - ghost notes do come through in the mix and they can give a way better feel of the music for you, the crowd and most importantly - the entire band.

learn the 3 "paradiddle patterns", that will pave the way for you. 1. R l r r L r l l R l r r L r l l repeat 2. R l r l r r L r l r l l " 3. R l r l r l r r L r l r l r ll " (uppercase letters loudly, lowercase letters quietly) first on the snare drum, then over the set. It's a lot of work, but it's definitely worth it.
