My first deployment to the Middle East is when I lost my faith in humanity my second deployment is when I gained my hatred for the Muslim community and my third and final deployment is when I realized I was wrong. I cannot even begin to put into words how glad I am I got to go back that last time because without that final realization I would be living with absolute unjustified hate in my heart. The world needs more stories like this, more than ever.

@@hasan7664 At the time my opinion of Muslims was based solely on the actions of those I was fighting. It is easy to hate a group that torture woman and children. As time went on I was able to start interacting with the people not trying to kill me and it really opened my eyes to just how kind, loving and generous people of the Islamic faith really are. I now realize that we weren’t fighting the Muslims we were fighting extremists that just happened to be Muslim. There are those in every demographic that use their race, religion, gender, orientation and economic status as a weapon and sadly it took me far too long to see that those few do not speak for the rest. This is the moment I started to realize the error of my ways: - On my last deployment we were receiving intermittent direct fire throughout the night from a small hamlet along the Pakistani border. The next morning we rolled into the village expecting heavy resistance but instead we found a group of scared malnourished Afghans that explained to us the Al-Qaeda fighters had been moving in and out of the area using the village for cover to launch attacks as well as kidnapping children from the region.

@@hasan7664 (Sorry part 2) We provided medical care, food, water and clothing to the villagers as well as regional security for them. These people that had nothing to give pulled every resource they had and made us a traditional hot meal that they carried over a mile to bring it us. That act of sacrifice and kindness from them showed me the love and generosity of the true believers of the Islamic faith. I will never forgive myself for my hateful thoughts and actions but I can admit that I was wrong and do my best to show others that have blinded by hate.

@@abdullahhussein3775 By that logic a significant portion of converts to Islam are Christian. Who collectively I might add far trump any agnostic or atheistic minds. As for converting to christianity? I seriously doubt those numbers are even meaningful, for the fundamental fact that if you believe in God and you were a practicing Muslim who understood the religion, you'd understand why it's an odd step to take. Dude, I'll tell you this now, that attitude ain't self-righteousness, its you trying to deflect from your own short comings because you don't want to look inside and do the work. Best of luck to you.

@@rationalistfaith It sounds like you have a low opinion of the US. I'm aware of the US bombing Iraq, and Afghanistan, which I believe ended up killing thousands of innocent civilians, directly by US Bombings, or crossfire. And, if you counted all of the civilian deaths that were killed, not directly by the US, but as a result of the war, then that number of civilian deaths would jump up monumentally. Perhaps hundreds of thousands. And, that seems fair to put that number total on the US's back, in any case that the US started a war, unjustly. From what I've seen, it appears that the US unjustly began an unprovoked war in Iraq. Tho, I'm not sure if the war in Afghanistan was unprovoked, nor unjust because the Taliban was harboring and protecting Osama Bin Laden, who was a fugitive for masterminding the 9-11 attacks.

Well, I'm an ex-muslim and I'm a Christian now. I do agree there is so much division in this world, but most importantly we from the Middle East need to start talking about our own garden first of all. The hatred between sunnis and shias, as well as sunnis/shias and other islmic sects needs to stop. Muslims have kept killing each other for centuries till today. There are countries where members of different islamic sects keep bom*bing each others majids. I could go on and on about the islamic hatred against the Jews and Christians which is even obvious while reading some of the comments here. But there is even so much hatred among muslims to each other. I have never experience so much hatred and racism in any community, as I have experience among the islamic uma. That is the sad truth and reality, unfortunately.
