I wouldn’t describe the Huskies’ loss to Bama as being “dismantled.” If you go back and watch the game, it was a lot closer than the final score shows. The defense played great for most of the game, and the team had a few shots to keep the game close. Bama was the better team, but it was not the worst showing by the dawgs.

Current Huskies TE Coach Nick Sheridan was the hook for Penix at Indiana. Sheridan was a grad assistant at Tennessee and recruited Penix to TN. When Butch Jones was fired at TN, they pulled Penix's offer. By this time, Sheridan moved on to QB coach at Indiana. Penix had no other offers after TN pulled their offer, so Sheridan saw this as an opportunity and recruited Penix to Indiana. First year OC Kalen DeBoer then teamed up with Sheridan as the QB coach to develop Penix and the rest is history. Just wanted to point out for the record that Nick Sheridan was the first to link with Penix.

We were doing ok and you were right, we still had the pieces to be a respectable team. I have some ideas as to why Lake was so bad (terrible Offensive coordinator for starters) but who could have seen such a fall? I will give Jimmy Lake some credit though….UW had a run of some of the best DBs and safety’s in college football for about 6 years. From here till the rest of the season I’m going to be on the edge of my seat. Washington’s schedule for next year in the Big 10 is out and it looks like we have 5 tough games vs Michigan, USC, Penn State, UCLA, and Oregon. We play Iowa also but never sure what to make of them. Plus we have 3 open dates and I’m sure they’ll try to get Washington State on the schedule in one of those. I’m not going to miss playing Utah, Oregon State and going to the damn Arizona desert where we always seem to have trouble.

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I would have to agree with that. I’m going to miss the PAC 12 but I think the Big 10 isn’t quite as good. Michigan, Ohio State and to some extent Penn State are probably at the top and will be very very hard to beat. But the drop off is pretty dramatic after that. I’m sure Iowa will be tough but beatable, but top to bottom the PAC 12 is just a tougher schedule to play. The problem is with all the PAC 12 teams going into the Big 10, it’s going to be really hard to get a soft schedule. If you look at Michigans schedule this year you have to laugh. Besides Penn State, they could coast thru their schedule and prep for Ohio State weeks in advance. I guess we’ll find out how good Michigan really is in a few weeks. This is the first year I’m not afraid to play anyone, even Georgia.
@AbbeyRoadkill1
9 ай бұрын
@@flydawg7784 You hit on the problem, which is that so many of the Pac-12 teams are going to the Big-10 along with us that we don't fully get away from the Pac-12 schedule. On top of that, we now have to deal with occasionally playing Michigan, Ohio St. and Penn St. Looking at the situation in it's entirety, I don't see how it's going to be anything but more difficult for Washington going forward. The WASU Cougars might get the better end of the deal by going to a conference where it's relatively easier for them to dominate, and make the playoff most years. I do have confidence in DeBoer and that, as long as he's the coach, he'll keep the Huskies competitive.
@flydawg7784

@@AbbeyRoadkill1 totally agree. I think it’s very possibly the last season a Big 10 team goes undefeated. Michigan and Ohio State and somewhat Penn State have enjoyed a nice easy conference schedule for a while now. It’s wake up time for the Big 10 to see what it’s like in the PAC 12. Most years the top of the PAC 12 just wasn’t quite up there with the usual suspects of Mich, Ohio State, Bama, Georgia, and a little bit of Clemson and LSU. But we were a fairly solid top to bottom conference. (Not to mention an extra conference game when the SEC scheduled mostly patsies out of conference games). I will admit, the top of the Big 10 and SEC was the top of college football. But you get past those top 3 teams and there was quite a drop off. I’m going to enjoy this undefeated season a lot because we have a really tough road ahead but it helps to have the best coach in college football. Go Dawgs!

Look what he did with Jake Haener at Fresno (Haener was a transfer from Washington and he really turned into a good QB there). I’m also hoping that high school QB’s and receivers are watching this Husky offense and saying that’s where I want to play and lead the nation in passing. Oregon is looking scary with their recruiting classes. The nice thing about going to the Big 10 (no offense Big 10 teams) is there’s a lot easier teams to play there. We should do ok till we rebuild.

Tyrone Willingham got a 4th year by way of cultural circumstances. There were very few black head coaches at the time and a groundswell of support from the BCA, AACA, etc. along with even some non-sports African American associations basically forced the hand of the AD in keeping him. You were supposed to give coaches at least 4 years to get things done (on a 5 year contract) in that period. Willingham had already been fired after 3 years at Notre Dame and most of the country felt he hadn't been given a fair shot. Washington became the victim of that sentiment.

you hit the main, well-known points, but there are a few big keys you missed: 1) the O-line is one of the best in the country, and has given Penix all kinds of time 2) Grubb only got mentioned once as sort of a side note, but he arguably more responsible for the offensive success than Penix 3) Grubb was offered a job at Alabama and turned it down, Penix and Odunze returned for another year when nobody thought they would - those guys coming back are THE reason 2023 has been successful so far. Without them, the team would probably be closer to .500. 4) nobody on the defense even mentioned? ZTF and Trice are NFL players and although the D has struggled, they continue to come up big when it counts.

Huskies had Mark Brunell (way back when) and he played half of game with another good Qb starting. Other teams had to re-re adjust. This year , note Carson Breuner slipping in as the other team starts to adjust to starter. Strong athletes are part of the tradition here . Warren Moon could bench press 450 , and could match his beefy lineman . Neuhisal in there along the way. Milked us good. East coast bias has been around along time. you can tell fans of "Team SEC" and ESecPN are getting nervous about the B1G, so hopefully Wash. doesn't miraculously "fall off" as soon as they join the conf. or something

Let's not forget the mid-2000s to early 2010s dark years were mostly because of Neuheisel and his dismissal. There was a lot of animosity for Neuheisel for the years following his dismissal.

Washington should be/is a top tier school. For a top tier school to hold onto a coach like Deboer it takes a combination of money and fit. Washington doesn't currently have the money of an Alabama (though it found enough money to hold onto the OC for now). BUT, in terms of FIT, Washington and Deboer are perfect for each other. Just like Petersen and James, who could have coached anywhere, the culture at Washington gives enough of the small town "feel" (1,000,000 +) and campus cohesion, without the over-obsessive booster pressure, for a guy like Deboer. He and Petersen were looking for a top tier program, in a place they were happy to raise their families. (Lake only got the job because he was "here" when Petersen suddenly, and without warning, hung up the clipboard. I respect why he did it, and he is still a big part of Washington.) If Deboer is not Coach of the Year, then the selection system is broken (he should have gotten it last year). Maybe due a topic on Coach of the Year. Thanks for the really good rehash of the past. GO DAWGS, BEAT UTAH!

It’s a great year to be a Huskies football fan. It’s looking likely that the (9-0) Huskies will be in the PAC 12 Championship game.

Dont think I would say this team is better than 2016. The 2023 offensive scheme is good enough to win any game, but the defense with Vita, Budda, Greg Gaines, Sidney Jones, Kevin King, and more who were better than current D. And theres gaskin ross pettis browning

I'm going to say it. Jimmy Lake didn't do anything wrong. Up until the last 5 minutes it was normal for football coaches to swipe a facemask and shove a player in their pads when the player was out of control and trying to fight. It shocks the player out of the stupid mental loop of bad decisions. I grew up a Husky fan, then went to college at WSU because that was the best decision for me at the time. I'm not an apologist at all I just thought that situation was blown way out of proportion. We all love the film Remember the Titans, go watch that celebrated film and how he was treating those players before we judge Jimmy Lake for that one incident that the player probably didn't care about one day later.

Oregon State is the team that stands in Washington's way to a playoff birth. The other two remaining games not so much as Utah was badly exposed by Oregon and Washington State won't be able to stop Washington's offense from scoring points. Oregon State always plays the Huskies tough and usually gives them fits.

Peterson did a great job also. I was hit by a coach in 7th grade, so I know first hand. Saw Penix play at Indiana as a freshman. Happy for him and U Washington program.

You really gotta go all way back to the end of the Don James era. Lambright coasted on fumes for a bit, but they have had terrible coaches until Peterson. The blame should extend up to the AD, at least. And then Lake. Those were dark times.
