The Incident at Hickory Sink, June 19, 1835, near what is today Archer, Florida. Near Kanapaha Prairie. Miccosukee warriors hunting for food kill a cow and get into a skirmish with the local militia.
This incident leads to a large number of the Seminole and Miccosukee to resist removal. In revenge, Private Kinsey Dalton was killed while riding express the following August near Fort Brooke.
I am reading from a dissertation on the Florida Militia: “The Florida Volunteers: Territorial Militia in the Opening of the Second Seminole War,” by Maj. Ryan P. Hovatter, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. (2021).
You can also read Agent Wiley Thompson’s letters on the incident to the Department of Indian Affairs, Congressional Doc. 271, 24th Cong., 1st Session, House of Reps., pages 67-69.
