Mate you get a sub for the developer answer and the stellar video all round. A solid tip, if you shoot IR and are worried about focus, most old lenses have a tiny red dot to the right (at least on canon fd lens it is to the right) of the orange focus line. Once you visually focus, note where the orange line is pointing on the distance focus measurement, if it aligns with 7m for example then focus it so that the 7m now aligns with the tiny red dot and boom your focused in the IR spectrum. The red dot is a benchmark for IR focusing.

In bulk this is actually one of the most affordable black and white film around. If it weren't for the finicky and thin base they used I wouldn't mind using it as my day to day BW film tbh

680 nanometers looks almost identical to 720 filters on the final image, but you can still see a little bit of red visible light, so you can actually focus and compose the image. And you can just focus visibly, then move the focus ring to where the red line is on it (on most lenses, especially vintage ones) to get the red line where the visible focus point used to be, allowing you to use wide apertures and hand hold.

Excellent video, Cameron. I am pretty new to shooting film and never shot IR so your video was very informative and I think this will be a fun outing with my first roll of Rollei 400. Nice demonstration. The explanation over the IR an d the spectrum was very clear. Just to tell you that according with the datasheet of the film, the clear base after development was expected, because is polyester. It is recommended as a slide film also. Thanks.

How do you expose with an ir filter on the lens? Is the camera meter good enough indication of proper exposure, or is there a 'rule of thumb' ?

This was great! very straightforward. I have been researching this infared thing for a while and am still pretty confused but I guess I'll just give it a try. Curious though because a bunch of stuff I read said to use a yellow #12 filter so that's what I got. But maybe I need the one you have?

Why did you go 8 minutes on the developing time though? Was that to compensate for prior usage/weakening of DF96 or was there another reason?

Your video has convinced me to load the film and go hunting for some greenery tomorrow. Thanks for the useful info. I wasn't sure about the metering situation. Sounds like 5 stops is a good place start.

I understand f16 if I am shooting with cameras like smena8 and I can't focus, or in situation where I shoot without removing IR, but if you focused before putting filter at least f8 would be better idea for me, as sharper lens sweet spot, negligible les DoF (which is not really important if you know where your focus spot is), and also less motion blur

Im a complete newbie to film cameras and to try out I got two random films and one of them is infrared. I have two questions: How do you know which filter is right for you and how do you apply that? Other, I didn't see much indoor shots with this filter, it seems to be outdoors or landscape mostly. Why? Thank you!
@anzaeria
2 жыл бұрын
For infrared films, a lot of people recommend the R72 filter. It's meant to a good general purpose filter for IR imagery. IR filters like the 72 are incredibly dense. You lose a huge amount of light with them so they're more suited to outdoor photography. If you used such a filter indoors, you would have to leave the shutter open for an extremely long time - probably over a few minutes. And you would have to take reciprocity failure into account.

it's as simple as photographing your oven in a pitch black kitchen... shortwave 'IR' is still IR ... at a shorter wavelength.... why pitch black? so there's nothing visible other than the heating element in the oven 'glowing red' from 'heat'

Hi there, Everyone says that we should bring the iso (asa) 400 down to 25 with this film.. did you do this or just overexposed at 400 iso, thanks for your time to answer 👍🏻
@CameronZamot
4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Sorry for the delay. Bringing the ISO down to 25 is the same thing as compensating for 4 stops of overexposure. I decided to bracket and overexpose between 4 and 6 stops for this roll of film and got pretty good results. However, ONLY do this if you're using a Hoya R72 filter or similar 720nm filter. If you're not using a filter, just rate it at 400 iso! Happy shooting!
