I played nine holes with Moe's in 1999 at Ariss Valley golf course. It was 630 am a beautiful day. I went to the clubhouse to pay for my round,,the club pro said Moe is on the first tee see if you can join him, although he is a bit shy and may want to golf by himself.I said sure went down to the tee and introduced myself and asked if I could join him.Now at that time I did not know what Moe looked like, and to me I was just going to play with a guy named Moe. He kind of reluctantly agreed we shook hands and off we went.He was wearing 3 to 4 long sleeved shirts ,3 watches had about 25 clubs in his bag,a few missing teeth, and started muttering and talking to himself about what the preferred shot would be needed off the tee.It was about 30degrees Celsius at at 7am ,I thought he was going to roast with all those shirts on.Anyway I played the 9 holes with him not knowing it was the " Moe Norman" I just thought the boys sent me out with an eccentric old guy.He called out that he needed about a 3 yard draw for the first shot, took what to me looked like the worst swing I had ever seen, then watched the ball fly out perfectly with a 3 yard draw. This went on all round and I thought this is the luckiest old bugger I have ever seen in my life.I played well we both shot 40 although he didn't really try putting very much so he probably could have had a better score .After the round we shook hands off he went, and I went to the clubhouse to ask who the hell was that guy? They thought when they said Moe was on the first tee that I knew who they were talking about, but I just thought I was golfing with a guy named Moe. The most sureal round of golf I have ever played and the most memorable. RIP Moe,thanks for the match!

Played golf as a kid until I was 16. Played baseball, softball, etc. until my body told me to stop in 2003. Took up golf. I practiced but I was a 95-100 golfer even with plenty of practice and lessons. Then I stumbled on a book filled with photos of Moe Norman and his "weird" single plane swing. It made so much sense to me that I started trying it at the driving range. Took it onto the course and broke 90 after a week. Moe made golf fun for me and I'm still playing his swing(my poor imitation of it) 20 years later. I'm now shooting in the low 80's and high 70's. As a 71 year old I shot my age last year. Those pros that drove Moe off the tour knew he would eventually beat them soundly. Thanks, Moe, I still play and love golf because of your brilliance.

At the 1987 Canadian Tour Q-School, I decided to have breakfast at the club. At the next table was sitting Moe Norman. I didn't say hello to him because I knew Moe was shy. As I finished my round later that day, I saw a large group on the practice tee and knew Moe was hitting balls. One of the guys asked Moe how many hole-in-ones he had. He quickly answered 13 bent over and teed up his ball. He then turned and looked at the guy and said, "Eight on the fly." His ball striking was pure, but what impressed me most was his consistency - he never mishit the ball. I would have liked more time to analyze how he addressed the ball and better yet to discuss it with him. I also remember how he handled his driver, you would have thought it was a magic wand. He treated his driver with the utmost respect. I've never seen anyone else who has shown such attachment or affinity to a golf club as Moe did that moment. And think about this, he achieved his reputation without ever winning a major. It would have been so much easier had he won majors but it wasn't in the cards for him, nonetheless, he and Hogan are the only two considered to own their golf swings.

My husband first met Moe Norman at the Alberta Open in Canada in 1966, at the Canyon Meadows Golf Club in Calgary. There were some very good players in that tournament including Stan Leonard and Bob Panasiuk from Windsor, Ontario. Moe ended up in a playoff after the 3 rounds in pouring rain with a very good amateur, John Kilborn ,from Edmonton. At the first hole of the playoff it was pouring rain- it was really raining all day - and there were several hundred spectators waiting for the players to arrive. They were looking around for Norman and someone said they thought he had gone back to the motel he was staying at. So they had to send a driver to bring him back to the course. Now Kilborn was a rather slow , deliberate player who teed off first. His drive was down the left side of the fairway, and Norman was down the middle (of course) . Michael was standing right behind Kilborn and waited while he took his three or four practice swings. He was away, and Norman was impatiently waiting for him to hit. The amateur struck a 2 iron and while the ball was still in the air, Moe hit his shot so that the two balls kind of criss-crossed each other in the air- like a trick shot exhibition. Kilborn's ball was a little short and ended up on the fringe about 50 feet from the flag, and Normans' was pin high about 20 feet away. Rain still coming down in torrents. Kilborn took forever to hit the chip , and hit the ball about 4 feet from the hole. Again, Michael noticed that Norman hit his putt a fraction of a second after the chip from his opponent, to around a foot away. Unfortunately the amateur was so rattled by this 'gamesmanship' (you could probably call it that) that he missed his putt and the trophy was Moe's. True story.

Moe wasn’t among the elites because he couldn’t move the ball like the elites could. Golf isn’t a game of straight ball shots, among the greatest of all time. He is the greatest of all time in many regards. He wasn’t a long hitter nor carved his shots to put him in the elite class. It’s ok. We all wish we could hit like Moe.

I'm glad I discovered this documentary because it sums up my personal research on Moe Norman's life quite well. What should be mentioned, however, is that with the release of the film "Rain Man" in 1988 that many have made the connection between the condition the main character played by Dustin Hoffman and Moe Norman. In fact, Moe Norman was autistic, a disease unknown at the time. He possessed a genius for hitting a golf ball, never took a single lesson and never suffered any injury with his swing despite his endless hours of training. There are so many tasty anecdotes about him, his story deserves to be known.TY

Mr.Norman is a legendary golfer, an icon. At least for me. The first time i ever heard his name was from Hank Haneys book "The big miss", where he explains a lot of Mr.Normans thinking. I actually tried some of the stuff Mr.Norman used, wich was a slightly weaker grip to hit more straight shots. Yes i practice a lot but that slight change got me down from a 9hcp to a 3.5. I also would like to thank you, the creator of this video for making such a good job. This was a very good workpiece and i will watch it many more times❤
