If the dorks riding public transportation can't pay for it 100% (even though they are 100% of the users), why do you demand an NFL team pay 100% of the costs for something they only use 3% of the time? Ya the Packers have continuously been renovating Lambeau with their own money which is why they're able to continue using it and still have plans for the next few decades to continue renovating the stadium and surrounding area with their own money and through stockholder sales. The only time they used taxpayer money was the initial massive renovation in the late 90s but since then it's been all paid for by the team and just like how the Bears don't own Solider Field the Packers don't even own Lambeau Field yet they're still dumping money continuously into it. @chrisj.9882
Ай бұрын
Not only were the taxpayers asked to pay $400 million for the renovation 20 years ago, but I'm pretty sure they haven't even begun to pay off the principle. It's gonna cost A LOT more than that when (if?) it's all done. Here's a key thing about the current situation: They bought the Arlington Heights land under former team president Ted Phillips. He apparently was all about building there. Then he retires, Kevin Warren shows up and is like, "You bought the land before you got a deal made? You fools, you did it backwards!" Warren has been all gung ho about trying to get a new stadium on the lakefront. Lori Lightfoot's attempts to woo the Bears were too little, too late. She was antagonistic towards them until they bought the land in Arlington Heights. Her plans always came off as a bit rushed and under-thought. Kevin Warren -- if he really is trying to get a stadium built on the lakefront - really hasn't done a good job at all from building up any goodwill on the matter. He comes off very pompous every time he opens his mouth on the matter. Then again, it's possible this is all just a leverage ploy to get tax breaks out of Arlington Heights. (That said, he sure has put a ton of time into pushing from his proposed lakefront stadium).
@phytonso9877
Ай бұрын
The issue is that the Bears have very little leverage over Arlington Heights. If they don't build there, they'll eventually sell to some developer who can build a big mixed-use development that will have great freeway and commuter rail access. That development will probably come with more local property taxes for Arlington Heights than a stadium district, and have fewer negative externalities on the local populace.

He said, "hold my beer". He built Joe Robbie Stadium directly on the Dade-Broward county line, WITH HIS OWN MONEY. Controlled all concession and parking. It immediatly doubled the value of the franchise! When the Bears (or any NFL franchise) sez, "It is impossible for us to build a stadium with our own money", the translation is- "We don't feel like it." Maybe they should use that to build the domed stadium, dip into the tourist tax with permission to cover cost overruns, and delay the surrounding development until profits are realized from stadium events. They started tearing down the racetrack before the tax issue came up. That's an important detail you seem to have missed. It's also worth pointing out that they bought the property at a premium, and if done by the book, and not the Chicago way, the sale price should have no bearing on the assessed value of a property which is mid-development.

I think the writing is on the wall for anywhere that isn't Arlington Heights. So when the Bears got pissy over $33 Million in valuation (this is a stupid amount to fight over when the NFL turns over Billions a year) they said "We're no longer singularly focused" which was really the call for "Give us your best deal". And it faceplanted! Aurora, Naperville, and yes the city were all awash with rumors and "interest" but the Bears were only ever interested in "Free Money". Beetlejuice puts out renderings of a roof over existing Soldier at a price tag of 1-2 Billion. LOLNO. Then the Bears announce a press conference where they say they're working with the City/Park District to come up with a lakefront solution. Sounded nice until you saw who actually showed up. Warren on one side, and some random alderman on the other side. Not even the mayor of the city was there. This was a badly disguised red herring and anyone actually watching it knew it was bad theater. Then the rendering comes out of how this new stadium (loosely copied from JerryWhirled) is now magically going to sit south of Soldier Field on the Waldron Parking Deck. With what room in footprint space does anyone believe that a larger stadium is just going to sit on a smaller print south of Soldier? Lake Shore Drive is occupying the space, so are we going to spend to cut-and-cover LSD or some sort of Big Dig style operation to get to the needed footspace? Old Soldier is just going to be left the roman colonnades with park space and that's it? It's a nice render, but again - there was never a chance in hell. Now we have the AH mayor saying the teachers have sent a new agreement to be reviewed by the Bears. I feel that AH is it - especially now that Gov Pritzker has told both the McCaskeys and Jerry Reinsdorf that there will be no state money coming for either of them. The City of Chicago is still holding those bonds from New Soldier. Cook County isn't going to underwrite a stadium. None of the other counties around Cook are willing to commit municipal financial sudoku for the sake of having the Bears. Every elected official up there knows that this is political sudoku. The populace is educated enough to know that stadium money is not worth return on investment, and bitter enough to know that the McCaskeys can slobber the knob for all they've done while in ownership of the team since 1983. The only move for the Bears at this point is to build on land owned in AH, likely with monetary support from Churchill Downs so they can have a sportsbook/resort/casino thing. If they want the profits, they can sacrifice to build the dream. We aren't buying it anymore.

Yeahhhh the original soldier field was actually built hundreds of years before 1922. 1922 was when the deconstruction was finished and it repurposed as a football stadium. This has been done all over the country/world. Beautiful old world structures were remodeled and repurposed into museums, universities churches and government buildings. A tragedy for certain.

I remember when there was talks about moving to Gary. I lived there at the time and was a little excited. They wanted to build the stadium on a superfund site near where the casinos used to be. Gary was also trying to become the third airport at the time. Fast forward to today and Gary has new bright ideas about coming back to life. Good luck because just like the Bears, it might be another 100 years before any progress is made.

The long term money for ownership is at Arlington. Stadium and surrounding commercial ownership would multiply profits. Arlington Heights schools do not need any money, that is a very affluent neighborhood, I have family living there. Infrastructure around the area is a different story roads, sewer, water, etc. Bears still have contract for Soldier Field through 2033 whether they play there or not. Expect them to stay until the end. The McCaskey family will never sell.

They will end up in Arlington. As a die hard I think it is the best move. As soon as the red tape is removed. Easy access and a boon to the area. In order for them to continue on the lakefront massive infrastructure needs to be done for commuting, not to mention the Friends Of The Park and taking excessive tax payer money. Pritzker won't budge period. Kevin Warren is not going to allow the Park District, or FOTP of Chicago to dictate anything.

The Bears want to pay WAY LESS on taxes than what the property is worth. Arlington Heights negotiated with the team to pay less in taxes than what the purchase price was, but the Bears still said no. This isn't about a city asking a team to pay high taxes. It's about rich people not wanting to not pay their fair share.

One of my favorite exchanges in “It’s Always Sunny” is statewide cut backs meant the loonie bin had to release crazy Pete. Dennis thinks that’s crazy and Dee is like, well, it’s that or raise taxes, which just infuriates Dennis. “What! Raise taxes?!? I already pay a ton in taxes, how much do these vultures need?” He’s so angry at paying taxes to house the crazy people and wants to know where his tax money went. Dee said the used it to open up a new practice field for the Eagles. Then Dennis is all calm, “that makes sense. That’s a no-brainer. You can’t have out guys out there twisting ankles.”

The org has even said its main goal for the new stadium is to keep costs down and get it done on schedule. Which means it’s probably gonna suck. The ownership is too cheap to give themselves a good stadium and actually spend money.

If they were to buy that PERFECT plot of land and not end up developing on it, it would probably be the biggest gaffe in Chicago Bears history - which says a lot. You couldn't ask for a better situation than that. It addresses every problem there is with the lakefront site, and also offers a ton of more land for development, which could be another revenue source for the team. Any solution on the lakefront incurs the same problem - the City owns the land and would have their hand in the pocket of the McCaskeys. In the McCaskey's defense, the NFL is a money printing machine and there's no room for a team to be beholden to the park district and government anymore. Most teams own the stadium and the land and they make money on every possible facet of the operation. IMHO, the Bears were full go on the Arlington site until the schools stepped in. Asking for an immediate tax hike was a mistake, and the Bears had to find leverage because it is b.s. that they'd have to pay that much in taxes for years before they will even see a dime from the new property. The attempts by Mayor Beetlejuice were her attempting to be a bad cop, and the Bears couldn't leverage on that. Along comes Mayor Johnson, who is willing to do ANYTHING for the Bears to stay in town, and the Bears suddenly had their leverage. The Bears are moving to Arlington Heights. There's no doubt in my mind. The school district will compromise, because if the Bears move in they will eventually make bank with all the new tax revenue. If they don't, they'll have to find a way to bleed their taxpayers with even higher property taxes. The Bears will then have their own stadium, their own land, and it will be a site befitting of hosting a Super Bowl or WrestleMania or any of those huge events, with lots of open space and hotels, restaurants, etc. Two things with the lakefront proposal that people don't seem to be bringing up: 1. The whole 'Burham Park' idea, which is supposed to fend off the 'Friends Of The Park' is a completely separate cost from the numbers the Bears were throwing around. What's to say it ever actually gets built, especially to something that is similar to the renderings? 2. Building said park seems awesome on the surface, but you've just created yet another venue for people to travel into the city for, thus making the crowding, traffic, and parking situation that much worse. On a game day, you could now have people going to the museums, people going to the game, AND people going to the park. It's a recipe for disaster. I love the aesthetics of Solider Field by the lake. It looks awesome from that arial view on television. But it's just not a great location otherwise.

I have no problem with the public/private partnerships to build sports complexes. The trouble is many of these owners contribute a small % of the building costs, yet control the majority of the operational revenue, IE Parking, Name Rights, Consessions. Local Governments need to be smarter about how they design those partnerships. They could be very profitable additions.

As much as I like US Bank stadium in MN, they left so much on the table for the design. No retractable roof, the bird safe glass boondoggle, the large rotatable curtainwalls being barely used, there's a lot left to be desired.
