I would argue Soul Calibur 3 is one of the best games in the series aside from 2. The sheer amount of content and replayability it had, still hasn't been topped in even the recent entry, It was the first game in the series to introduce CAC and it's the only one that actually made your character feel unique with job/classes. You had a class system with variations on weapons and the fighting style with it. So your character didn't feel like a copy and paste of a main roster character moveset.

I still play Soul Calibur 3 every year on my birthday. I owned Soul Edge on PS as well. The thing that works here is that the combat is so simple. Triangle vertical, Square for Horizontial, Circle for Kick and X to block. If only I didn't keep breaking my PS2 controllers. I can teach people to play it so quickly. Maybe with Street Fighter 6's popular simple control scheme we could see this kind of basic fighting game return. I know it could be deeper than that but weird combo's and super moves are often not good enough to beat someone just swinging their big sword about.

Soulcalibur will get another game. Bamco hasn't completely forgotten about the series yet. The main issue that Bamco has right now is managing game output. Back in 2012, Bamco restructured several of their studios to form their A Team, Bandai Namco Studios. Once they did that, they went from several smaller sub-studios working on parallel projects to one big studio that attempts to work on several projects at the same time. You can see this with their game output of several of their franchises as Soulcalibur, Tales of, and even Tekken had more frequent installments prior to 2012. Having one big team allows you to put more resources on a single project to make a "Mega Game" and a couple of smaller projects, but having multiple smaller teams allow you to work on several small to medium projects in parallel without too many hurdles. Because _Tekken 8_ is SUCH a big project, they had to outsource several of their projects to external teams. _Pac-Man World: Re-Pac_ got outsourced to Now Production, _Tales of Symphonia: Remastered_ got assigned to the Romania division that only really worked on mobile titles (kinda explains the botched port), _Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition_ is pretty much a port/localization job of the PS3 version that was handled by QLOC, and so on. BNS also works on a bunch of outsourced contracts now these days. They worked on several titles like _Super Smash Bros. Ultimate_ , _New Pokémon Snap_ , _Pokkén Tournament_ , and so on, so their resources get diverted frequently. That being said, Bamco seems to be understanding the benefit of having smaller teams as they made two new sub-teams within BNS called Studio 2 and Studio S (I believe they were made after this video was released, so you wouldn't have known it then). These two teams will work on assignments that get contracted out from external companies (probably Nintendo published titles if I had to guess), so their main division won't get distracted from making their games as much as before. After this video was made, Bamco released _Tekken 6_ and _Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny_ as PSP classics on the PS4 and PS5 systems. Had they not cared about Soulcalibur, they would've only done the _Tekken 6_ release. It is a simple port, but it's still a release nonetheless. Seeing that they make Season 2 passes only when they view Season 1 and/or the main game as being successful, it's pretty safe to say that _Soulcalibur VI_ was viewed as being successful and that we'll eventually get a sequel to it. Bamco did announce that the sales of the game "were solid", and they did a special announcement on Twitter to announce that the game sold 2m copies. Seeing that only _Soulcalibur II_ (4m copies according to an interview during SC3's demoing process) and _Soulcalibur IV_ (2.32m according to sales reports) outsold the game, I think a sequel is assured before too long. It's just that _Tekken 8_ takes priority as Tekken outsells the Soul series ~3:1. The Soul series is STILL the 2nd best selling 3D fighting game franchise (unless if you want to factor in Arena fighters, but those are a separate genre), so Bamco would be daft to ditch it completely as the games still outsell other 3D fighters like _Dead or Alive_ , _Virtua Fighter_ , and so on.

A few things: Soul Edge had its name changed to Soul Blade in North America due to a trademark on the word edge by Tim Langdell. Soulcalibur IV released in 2008, not 2009 (although Broken Destiny did release then). Not every cutscene in Soulcalibur V is a still image (you literally show a cutscene in the video). Soulcalibur VI is a reboot (that acknowledges the previous timeline) for the franchise and I'm pretty sure Project Soul (which is just a group inside Namco) still made it. SCVI also did well in sales and reception, basically ensuring that the series will continue and have a future. Feels like you're downplaying it a bit by making it sound like it failed or just came and went. True, Soulcalibur doesn't have the best presence compared to other fighting games, but still. If this vid was made around the time SCV came out, then the title of the vid would be a bit more accurate.

I just want to add my perspective as somebody who almost exclusively played in arcades until SC6 came out on PC, especially as somebody from Asia (Japan!) and still had a lot of access to arcades up until covid. Been playing the SoulCalibur series in arcades from Soul Edge until SC3, which was the last arcade release. I played it pretty competitively (well, it was pre-eSports so it was mostly small tournaments as you go around different arcades to compete) and it was my main fighting game. Anyway since I almost exclusively played in arcades, I don't really know too much about what you guys (especially Westerners who primarily played these on consoles) are talking about. Things like various modes and exclusive characters are things I only ever saw in videos like this. But especially when it comes to SC3's supposed forgettableness? SC3 was probably the most popular entry for us in arcades, if only because it was around for the longest since it was the last game as far as we were concerned. Of course many of us played SC4 and 5 on the respective systems but playing it in arcades was just so different. Like, how are you supposed to do a tournament on a PSP? So while people played the console versions as well, we would always come back to the arcades for tournaments and stuff, to play the "real" SoulCalibur. That was until slowly the machines started disappearing from arcades to make space for the newer games. In Japan, I couldn't find any arcades that still had SC3 in any of the arcades around my neighborhood by around 2017. Even the classic game arcades, like the ones with older versions of Tekken or Street Fighter didn't have them. For a competitive player like me, what's killing SC more than any of the stuff you just said, is actually the poor implementation of the online aspects of the game. It doesn't have rollback netcode nor does it have cross-platform play, which means if you bought the game on PC here in Asia, good luck finding decent matches, as many people would've been playing on PS4 instead. Or get ready to get matched with somebody in Europe and have an abysmal 8 FPS because, again, no rollback netcode. Also, what do you mean "we've already played" SoulCalibur 6? It literally has a new mechanic in Reversal Edge, which was a step in the right direction IMO for the competitive scene, as its tactical use is amazing if you know what you're doing. You're probably only talking about the story, however, which again, different perspective. Anyway to me, SC6 was a fine game, and again, this is coming from a sweaty player. The main issue was the clear lack of interest from the developers themselves, as there were only 2 "season passes" with new characters announced, and then all development seemingly stopped. With the lack of updates comes the meta getting stale, and then the game starts to dwindle. I don't mean to speak dismissively or as if I'm superior to casual console players who simply enjoy playing a fighting game here and there. But a fighting game lives or dies by its competitive scene. Having a story mode and console-exclusive characters is fine and all, but the longevity of a game and its franchise depends on how well we, the competitive players, take to the game. We're the people that spend money on all the DLCs to keep up with the meta. We're the people who buy all the cosmetics for our main characters even if others scoff at how expensive they can be. We're the people that buy the merch and stuff. As it is now, the developers don't even seem interested in nurturing the fighting game community, or at least supporting the product they already launched. We would've been the evangelists for the game. We would've been the ones hyping it up, trying to get all our friends to buy it too so we could play against each other, streaming the game, participating in tournaments, and so on. But since we feel let down by the game's developers, most of us just move on to play other fighting games that feel like they do respect us and our hobby (such as Street Fighter 6 or Tekken).
@raionbomber75

Yo, thanks for this perspective. Biggest reason why SC3 was when the series fell off for us in the US is because the console version happened before the arcade version, so the fixed alot of bugs and they never gave us another console port, so we never got to see how good SC3 arcade was.
@rei1789

@@raionbomber75 Sounds like even back then they were really bad at maintaining support for their products. :( I personally feel very salty about how SC6 could've been great if only it did some of the things that Street Fighter 6 did, like again rollback netcode + cross-platform play. @MitsuSC

Hi @rei1789 While most of what you say is true, the biggest reason the SC series hasn’t enjoyed success imo is due to the fact that the development team always happens to be completely changed over, while a game like Tekken enjoys a much more stable development period, with members in their teams that go back as far as Tekken 3. The original creator left Namco many years ago and SC was left abandoned in a way. The last true Soulcalibur game that felt like it truly had a cohesive vision behind it was SC3, console glitches aside. I actually envy the fact you got to enjoy SC3AE. Had the console version released with AE’s balancing, fixes and extra content it would have been the best Soulcalibur game ever. Again, speaking from my own point of view. I remember hearing Namco even lost the SC3AE masters so that’s why it hasn’t been re-released. But I would kill for a proper remaster of SC3AE on modern consoles, with the gameplay completely intact, more than an actual new entry in the series, at this point. SC6 was very decent and a step in the right direction.

I wish they would do a remaster of sc3 because I think it was a good game in my opinion,but maybe I view the game more diferently than you because I used to play chronicles of the sword a lot and I mean a lot.Also I really liked the character roaster especially Abyss(I still think he's cool) and the story mode and I know the combat sistem it s not as refined as sc6 but I still think it is pretty good

There's parts of SC3's combat that I really liked more than SC6's honestly. I liked that the combo system seemed more flexible and didn't require very specific and tight timings for button inputs. People could come up with their own juggle combos especially. And partly because of that, even people playing the same character could have different play styles, especially during higher level/tournament play. Like an aggressive pokes and juggles-based Xianghua vs. a confusing mix up Xianghua vs. a defensive Xianghua focused on punishing the opponent. That made it a bit more interesting to me. I feel like that's a bit less of a thing now in SC6, as each character has pretty much their own archetype now, and at high levels (yes including the pros as you might see them in Evo or whatever) you typically only ever see a character played a specific way. Mina uses her range and ring out ability, Talim is pretty good with mixup and defense as her Reversal Edge is one of the best in the game, etc. If there's anything I want to see changed in SC7, that's one of the main things. Other than rollback netcode + crossplay of course.

I'll admit that I enjoyed the creator as well, but I can't help feeling it was an innovation that helped to slowly kill the franchise. It's probably rather telling that so few other fighting games have ever implemented anything similar. Fighting games arguably depend on their recognizable roster of characters, but when you just let the players make their own avatars, all that professional character design sorta goes to waste.

I started with Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast, which was a good game, but where me and my friends really got into it was with the second game (in our case on the Gamecube). Hour upon hours we spend on fighting each other. SC3 actually is my favorite, with a (for the time) nice presented story mode, and that special mode where you had to create your characters (which had a good creator especially for the times) and move them around a map strategically, was great. With the fourth game, I lost my interest in the series, as it felt like the programmers did as well, just a bare-bone game, and fifth entry I didn´t even play because of it...

I agree on SC3 being the best. ^^ Chronicles of the Sword was such a blast. I loved that it continued for longer than expected, and the new game + was a nice difficulty increase. I used to play it with friends. We'd each create one or more characters, I'd move them around the map, and they would each play their own characters. So many stories. Just great overall. And it felt like there was more complexity and variety to the movesets of the characters. I've revisited it after playing further games, and I just always feel like I have more combat options in SC3.

Might need to check the tint on those glasses a little and revisit it. Chronicles was a fun mode but the last few chapters... Tales of Souls in later episodes the AI are often unstoppable killing machines that perfectly dodge, duck, block and/or counter every single attack or throw you could execute to the exact frame. Many very vocal diehard fans didnt appreciate 3 and kept crying they wanted 2 again. And so they took a step backward rather than forward.
