This movie really showed Lorenz Tate's range as an actor. His Menace II Society, The Inkwell and Dead Presidents are all 3 completely different characters. This was crazy.

Drew was traumatized by accidentally setting the family house on fire. His dad was traumatized by it as well. It was the 70s. People weren't the best at healing from trauma then & black people DEFINITELY considered psychiatry to be intended for crazy people.

I love how you mentioned Drew possibly being on the spectrum. I have been doing a lot of research on Autism for a while now, for I think I probably have it. Still hoping to one day get actually diagnosed though! On another note… I have never, and I mean *NEVER* related to a character as much as I did with Drew. The way he is, the way he interacts with others; especially when he was with his cousin and his friends and always being seen as the “weird one”. I resonated with those scenes so much… I resonated as being seen as “the weird kid” for all of my life. What made it resonate more especially is: Being Weird and *Black!*. I always felt especially isolated from my black peers because to this day, mental health is extremely stigmatized within our community. I met other “weird/off” kids growing up, but rarely were they black. Never have I seen black kids/characters in general represented in media, so I always felt that there was definitely something wrong with me… woo, this is making me want to write a whole essay on Drew myself, and how much I see myself within him. Shy, Awkward, Missing Sarcasm, Not reading people well, Disliking change, Easily excited, Extremely kind, gullible and naive…. Now THAT is someone who is just like me! It seriously makes me happy to see.

As someone who is a lot like Drew’s character it is disheartening to be dismissed or worse viewed as incompetent simply because you don’t fit people’s narrow perception of “normal or gifted”. People can be their own worst enemies including parents even when they think they are doing what’s right especially in the black community since mental health isn’t as much of an open subject so neurodiverse people are often stigmatized.

@@StruggleReviewzTV I don't know. Yes, PEDOPHILIA IS WRONG, but you have two lovelorn people in bad situations. Drew doesn't have a friend in the world because he doesn't fit in it while Heather is married to a dog of a husband. Also, It's not like Heather's a pedophile. Drew's innocents worked in his favor and against him at the same freggin time. Now riddle me that one. I see Drew and the doll as the same person, as he was internalizing his feelings to a doll and pretending to have the doll reciprocate its feelings back. The very first scene in the movie showed this as he was riding his bike. Some people would mistake this for bi-polarism or skitzoprenia( excuse my spelling). If we pay close attention , Drew was a normal kid that found solace in a doll . it really bothered me how the father ( Drew's) begin to doubt his son's sanity and lash out at him and and the psychiatrist. He may have been the very reason why his son was communicating with a doll in the 1st place. Now Jada' s character was a reflection of herself in real life . very sleazy and grimy and as she was playing checkers and using Drew as a move, another power was playing chess and despite opinions about AJ Johnson's character Heather preying on a child, ill slightly disagree. Both parties were hurt and needed consoling , as i saw the " sex" scene as an exchange, Heather was rewarding Drew with intimacy and Drew's presence was needed to help Heather heal. The 1st thing she did was hug him then thank him. And no i dont condone statutory rape

Come on, 6K! Feels like you hit 5K only a week ago! 👏👏👏 I recall seeing this on the TV when I was 5, and feeling so sad for Drew when he peeped Lauren with ol' boy, and ran away crying. I was so used to Jada playing relatively likable characters, so seeing her in this was a 180! William from "Girlfriends" was definitely my first glimpse of a Black Republican. Sadly, lots of young men are taught in society that "scoring" with an older woman is an achievement. So, it doesn't surprise me that scene with Heather happens, despite how gross it is. 🚮🚮🚮

I don't think it was much of a scoring as it was trying to connect with someone emotionally. Drew is an odd duck, and, in the euphoria of Black power and love, he doesn't fit in that big picture. I know how he feels.

@@StruggleReviewzTVreat review and spot on with the uh “relationship” thing, it was not appropriate and I low key knew something suspect like that was going to happen from earlier in the movie because of how innocent and super friendly Larenz’ character is and served as easy bait for the older woman character. That scene Definitely couldn’t get made today which is good. It was the 90s so a lot of things flew that we applauded or just didn’t think about. The boys running women was also cringe and outdated but that happened in the 70s. I still like this movie for the progressive things it did well with the political and mental health conversations . Also so glad to see a black married couple struggle and decide to work it out and love each other in the end, warmed my soul!

I appreciate the storytelling because we are always under the assumption that if you're a nice guy you deserve a relationship with a person. So the Lauren character is interesting because at the end she didn't owe Drew anything. It's kinda similar to (the last American virgin) but Matty took a whole wrong turn by making the sex with Heather as the reward. A whole SR scene was the climax nah. Just never liked it.

The thing of the Matter the old addage age isn't only a number is a Truth. Drew's mind was so exceptional that he was beyond people his age. A older woman picked up on it but she had a man. ONce that man was shed she was able to see him truly for what he was, a genius. I think the constraints of age now a days must change. Children are growing up fast and to be honest sex is apart of growing up. I was hit on a lot by older women when I was young. The world will never be perfect. We won't be able to completely stop these things from happening. It kills me when someone like this chick who is half clad and talking about she was so offended like she is holier than thou with her head covered throwing stones at the directors. I mean I'm sure this lady did not wait till 18 to have sex and I'm sure she is having sex out of wedlock. We judge others so harshly when 3 fingers is pointing back at us.
