Walter Röhrl smoked them all, if he wanted to. He just didn't care for trophies and didn't like the fame. He just wanted to know for himself. When he got upset, because the other drivers wanted to test new tires instead of going home for christmas like they had settled before, they called him crazy because of not testing, but he told them it wouldn't matter. He'd give everyone of them 10 minutes [time difference] anyway. After christmas through snow, ice, fog and night he was 10 minutes faster than all of the "best drivers" mentioned in the video. Minutes, not seconds! So don't just trust in numbers.

Wooooooo could you imagine a safety spec'd, with regulation... to a degree on a "group B" style championship in this day and age would be WILD, I mean the steroid Olympics are actually happening so who knows 😂

Walter Roehrl definitely is the GOAT of Rally. Other won more championships, but that wasn't even his goal, because he was so on another planet. Besides being the only one who ever drove an AUDI S1 properly, he sometimes won stages by (until now) unexplainable pace with around 3 to 27 MINUTES to second - in his underpowered Opel Ascona, versus the Group B cars^^ Somehow, he once felt so connected to the car, that he drove a night stage at monte (rain, snow, dry, ice & everything inbetween) QUICKER than they drove the same stage the sunny day before, what gave him a lead of 45min, if i'm not mistaking. Loeb is great in consitency but was never much quicker than the others and McRae was a "daredevil" (whatever that means... Didn't he know what he's doing?👀??)

I never really watched or knew much about this era, but I did hear about Colin McRae, and the thought of races on dirt courses with spectators inches from the cars, with no barrier or nothing was just insane to me... Also, stratos is my favorite ralley car, from playing old-school racing games.

My father really loved the old style of racing, and was on hand to see some of the most amazing and terrible events in motorsports history, from high points, such as Stock Cars racing on the sands of Daytona Beach to being on hand for the horrific 1955 Le Mans tragedy. All that said, as an unreconstructed ol' hillbilly bootlegger running 'shine in a modded 1955 Chevy along the mountains of Southern Appalachia, Rally was his wheelhouse. He loved the sport and instilled the love within myself to the effect that i still drive an '05 389whp Subaru as a daily. Love the reaction, my friend. Most have no idea that Rally drivers are the most gifted mad bastards on the planet. Colin Mc is where it's at, btw....😢

@@ExploringTheSmoke I'm not going anywhere, my friend. I actually got to do a ride along with a semi-pro rally driver on a tarmac hill climb a few years back. As they were ratcheting my restraints I told them that it was gtg and they replied that it wasn't and that he would break my ribs with the lateral g loads if there was any bit of slack in the belt. The difference in skill between this man and myself could fill a novel, and this guy is technically an amateur. It was wild.
