The “Inside Man” is often the family member who is quiet when the intervention counselors are giving advice to families, but then will discredit the interventionists when they are not around. They can convince families to not move forward with professional addiction help because they want to be the hero. Another scenario where the Inside Man can interfere with treatment is when the family has decided to move forward with help, but this family member decides to go against everything the treatment is recommending. This causes confusion and issues with the entire treatment process as well.
