Like most Intel NUCs, it is fine for business workers (finance, accounting, marketing, or office admin). I'd also say it is solid for programmers and data analysts. Gaming... look into mini-PCs with the AMD CPU and iGPU.

I rather have a little bigger than 4 by 4in mini PC as long as it has quiet fans. mine sounds like a hair dryer when I play games.

There are some very quiet 4 by 4 mini pc and some even smaller. I wonder if replacing the 2.5" drive slot with an extra fan could help a little. If a gen 4 ssd gets hot, sometimes the main fan kicks into overdrive

Not really an Intel NUC replacement to be fair. Does it have quick and regular BIOS and driver updates to address bugs and security vulnerabilities? vPro remote management available? If it's not my own money, I'm buying Intel (or ASUS I suppose now), or litre-sized offerings from Dell, HP, or Lenovo. Nobody needs the headaches and non-existent support you can expect from these generic Chinese brands, especially if you're buying hundreds of them. For home use, yeah, they're fine, but I'd still pick the name brand if prices are similar, or even an off-lease model.

Agreed. Great for home use. Not mass office use for any mid-size business. Small business, maybe.

No one expects an i5 in this series to perform as an i7 or i9 would, but even given that, and the decent features, this one still feels like they cut corners they shouldn't have. I'm uncomfortable with the fact that on the AMZ US website their large description at the top says "Gen 4 SSD" and if that's a Gen 4 it's not a good one. It's nice to know that Geekom has been around for 20 years so perhaps their 3 year warranty is real. To be fair, the AX211 is unusually good for a mini at this price.

Hallo Rob, when do you think the Intel 14 comes out?

I am also curious of 14th gen/intel core ultra 5,7,9 processors. Their iGPU performance look interesting but we might have to wait months for their release. The 185H launched in Q4 23 which means we might have to wait Q3 or Q4 24 for mini pc similar to wait times of previous generations.

Usually a few months delay from Intel's official paper launch date. Hope to see them in March or April.

Hi Rob, can you recommend a low power budget mini-PC that can fit 2 x 4TB NVMe drives in the case? Very simple requirements - just a headless unit for media streaming (no transcoding) and Home Assistant (no gaming at all). I've found that a lot of the models you review aren't always available in mainland Europe, so it would be great if you can suggest more than one option. Thanks so much.

Not many budget units with dual NVMe. Most have a second M.2 2242 SATA slot. This is the only budget unit I've reviewed that has 2x NVME. kzitem.info/news/bejne/rHt6n39nmGKFgX4si=kUbxLACyLV1Fp4q8&t=118 Should be available on AliExpress.

How do you extract the Windows Product Activation Key after a first time boot/setup? E.g. I want to use the key to activate Windows after installing Proxmox on the Mini-PC and then install Windows on Proxmox.
@Robtech

It's usually tied to the hardware and activates automatically.
@declanmcardle

@@Robtech Hasn't worked for me in the past. If, after a Windows install, proxmox is installed, Windows determines that 'too many hardware changes' have occurred so it doesn't use the built-in license/BIOS/whatever. That's why I want to extract it (to a piece of paper/notepad/written down). Oldskool.

You can't for digital OEM licenses. Support might be able to provide a new key.

@Robtech Yeah. It's actually my first criteria in my search for mini pc. Desk clutter is a nightmare. I currently use Lenovo m90n-1 nano and it's great but only has 8GB of RAM and it's not upgradeable. Looking for something more powerful to work with my LG DualUp display. Just subbed to your channel. Great work you do here.
