The castle is Bodiam Castle, located in the village of Bodiam, near Hastings in East Sussex. For a great day out, visit the castle in the morning, picnic by the river, then leaving your car in the castle visitor car park, cross the bridge over the river and then spend the afternoon on the the Kent and East Sussex Railway.

@@chelmswoodjunction if you want to make a week of it, while Bodiam Castle is from a later date and nothing to do with the Norman conquest of 1066, it is within the area, the 1066 experience is worth doing too. Pevensey Castle (near Eastbourne), is in the area where it is believed the Normans landed and made base camp, before marching to Senlac Hill, where Battle Abbey in the village of Battle (named after the battle of Hasting), there is a marker where it was traditionally thought King Harold fell, however, more recent studies, believe the battle either took place on the North side of the village, or at least is where he fell. There is also the remains of Hastings Castle in Hastings, just a short walk and funicular railway ride from Old Town and Rock-a-Nore in Hastings, where you can take advantage of reduced entrance to The Smugglers Caves only a few hundred yards walk from the castle and the aquarium at Rock-a-nore. Other nearby attractions are Bexhill Museum, where Eddy Izzard's model railway layout is on display a short drive or train journey West from Hastings and Batemans, which was Rudyard Kipling's home about 1/2 hour drive north of Hastings.
