I personally believe it is safer to continue at the posted speed limit than to slow Dow. Each person has their own "safe" speed to slow down to, but wrecks would be far less likely when everybody continues at a speed equal to everybody around them. If one doesn't feel safe at the posted speed, pull over and park on shoulder until the visibility increases.

I drive in winter fog frequently, and it always amazes me the speed at which some people drive, with very low visibility. I get passed all the time, even when I can see less than a 10th of a mile. ( I look at the reflector posts to determine visibility). I'm not driving 25mph, but I do slow down, work or home can wait a few minutes longer, it's not worth the risk.
@cynthiatolman326

I agree with you, slow down and get in the right lane with your flashers on is the safest. I also believe the study I read about how our brains interpret driving in fog that found drivers actually speed up if they don't pay attention, so you ve got people going faster, others practically stopping(in the left lane), and the rest of us trying to be reasonable. It's a disaster waiting to happen.
@sabledriver

@@cynthiatolman326 I have done just that, when the visibility is near zero. It's recommended to pull over, but if you can't see the road very well, how do you know that where you are pulling over is safe. Just don't stop in the middle of the road. I think that is the worst thing you can do.

I lived in Sacramento when they were getting ready to resurface the freeways, and a massive pileup like this seemed almost inevitable. I-80 towards Davis was basically unmarked cement, people drove 75mph, it was a notoriously stressful morning commute at the best of times, and then the fog rolled in.
@jasonharrison25

I remember something like that not too many years ago on the I-50 to I-80 transition. they eventually marked the lanes but the paint had little contrast against the white concrete. white lane markings on white concrete. it was nerve wracking to drive with everyone zooming through like they always did but then the lanes basically disappeared. all through Sacramento down through the causeway was an accident waiting to happen. it took over a year for the city to finally fix it by restriping it with black paint or tar first under and around the white stripes so you could see them again. I've always wondered how something like this with the money they spent could be missed. there had to have been dozens of inspectors and safety officers over looking the project and not one called it out as unsafe and had it corrected before it opened I'm surprised and thankful there wasn't a major pileup from that blunder

That Tule fog is SO thick! My parents lived in Sacramento for a while and my mom regularly drove to Vallejo along I-80 for work. She often talked about how absurdly fast people would drive, too. I know at one point she was almost hit by truck that veered into the oncoming lane and another time she was almost sandwiched between two vehicles when someone came flying up behind her. First time I experienced it as kid I was equal parts enthralled and terrified, and when I was a teenager, my mom insisted she be in the car the first time I drove through the Tule fog. At the time I rolled my eyes, but as an adult I agree wholeheartedly.

Wonderful 200th episode! I live in Chattanooga TN just south of where this happened. I work for TDOT (Tennessee Department of Transportation) and I monitor the traffic cameras, control the electronic overhead message boards, and control the fog zone with the help of the TN HWY Patrol. In addition to that we also dispatch our HELP trucks. They go to accidents and help close lanes or the entire road if needed, they clean up small debris, they also help people with flat tires, give a gallon of gas if needed, jump starts, and other minor car issues. THP checks the area multiple times a day as well as us looking at them with the cameras. Luckily since Bowater is no longer around the fog zone is not as bad as it used to be and the smell is gone too. It was the nastiest methane fart smell for a few miles till you got past it. I didn't know making paper was such a smelly industry. If you want some pics of our dispatch/monitoring equipment or of the new fog zone illuminated signs just shoot me a message. One teeny tiny thing...Chickamauga is pronounced Chick-a-maw-ga. It is a Cherokee word and so is Tennessee (Tanasi), Chattanooga (Tsatinugi), Ooltewah and ton of other places around here.

Hi John, a few days ago I saw your video about the monorail disaster at Disney World - it made me think that the tragic accident of the Transrapid train on the test track in Germany, Lathen (about 20km from my hometown) in 2006, which in a way put the final nail in the coffin of the project in Germany, would (unfortunately) fit perfectly with this series. We were closely connected with the project through my father's company and built some service vehicles - fortunately not the one involved in the accident - for the track and at the time for Shanghai. It was not the only accident. I don't remember exactly when the accident happened, but a year earlier we had to overhaul one of our service vehicles because another company's vehicle had crashed into ours at about 30 km/h on the track. I've forgotten what masses were involved - but I'd probably find the picture with the sheared ~M20 bolts if I looked for it ...

I was driving on I-20 by six flags over Georgia during the afternoon thunderstorms when what I would later find out was a tornado passed over head. This dropped visibility from not being a concern to not being able to see the end of your own hood. This was terrifying because you had to be concerned about rear ending the car in front if you didn't stop quick enough and getting rear ended if you stopped too quickly. Took about 90 seconds to get pulled off the road and stopped by which point the visibility was back to normal.

I will never forget traveling to Toronto from Ohio in 2000. The densest fog I have ever seen seemed to come out of nowhere. It was the wee hours of the morning on a weekend and I only recall seeing less than ten cars on the stretch of 401. I knew nothing about the horrific pileup tragedy that had occurred on the same highway a year prior. It’s very difficult to describe how quickly the fog enveloped and the density of it. Most people have encountered fog, even serious fog. This was like nothing I’ve ever seen before or since. You couldn’t see anything. Nothing. Not the road, not any lights, absolutely not one thing was visible but fog.

I had the same experience maybe 6 years back on the 401 on my way to Toronto. I was driving at the time and was getting increasingly scared (was also nighttime). My husband advised me to turn on my hazards and pull over at the nearest exit. He took over driving at that point. We decided to take backroads and get off the highway. Took maybe 30 mins until we exited the fog but was my 2nd scariest experience, next to driving during a snow squall ☹️

I just hope folks don’t bring their bad habits with them during this current mass migration event as I would hate for us to wind up as badly as California has gotten. From what I hear since it was quite literally before my time, the state was nothing like how it is now back in the 70s and 80s. I don’t know how it changed so much either, but I suspect poor leadership regardless of which party said leadership hails from is most likely to blame, hence my earlier statement about hoping folks learn from their mistakes if they move eastward.
@litigioussociety4249

@@Jolis_Parsec Nothing to do with poor leadership. It's just the inevitable growth of government toward totalitarianism or communism by taking more and more property rights and ownership from the civilians. During the 80s California increased spending and taxation heavily, continued to do so ever since, which resulted in many businesses leaving in the 90s. As a result, they created all sorts exemptions for Silicon Valley and I believe subsidies for vineyards, which allowed the state to keep its big corporations happy. However, they have done nothing to really help smaller businesses, middle class laborers, and some larger businesses in markets California politicians pretty much hate. The state also has tons of welfare programs for the poor, which is why they've had mass immigration of Latin Americans into the state, and a ton of homeless Americans immigrate into the state.

In 1995 my father gave me my first driving lesson. He handed me a bottle of Windex and a roll of paper towels and he told me to clean the windows of his truck. He said "If you can't see, you can't drive." If you ever get into a situation where there is thick fog, rain, or snow, and/or anything else that limits your vision while driving, you slow down, or even pull over to the side of the road and turn your flashers on.
@P_RO_
2 жыл бұрын
Not so sure about the flashers as someone might think you're on the road and aim for them, but when rain, fog, or anything looks like it may need me stopping I begin watching far ahead to find a spot at the end of a guardrail where I can get well off the road where the rail can protect me with parking lights on. Whatever the hazard, always best to sit it out safely while letting the idiots crash.
@henrywalker2122
2 жыл бұрын
@@P_RO_ why would someone aim for a car with flashers on? If you're on the side of the hwy fog or not you should always use your flashers. That's what they are for.
@P_RO_
2 жыл бұрын
@@henrywalker2122 In the US the law requires truckers driving under the minimum posted speed to use their flashers and a lot of car drivers in low visibility conditions do that too. When visibility is very low people tend to look for vehicle lights ahead of them and will likely see flashers before only taillights, and then the instinct is to look at the lights which induces turning toward them as humans tend to drive where they're looking at. If I'm well off the road, parking lights are a legal and smarter choice sonce by the time someone sees them they will be going past me in their lane before they can change course. If I were close to a traffic lane, then flashers would be more appropriate. Most states have specific requirements regards the use of flashers but AFAIK none require them on the side of a highway unless you're near a traffic lane or otherwise presenting a hazard to other drivers. With me past and behind a guard rail it's better that nobody notice me as I'm on as safe a place as can be had in situations like this.

Congratulation on your 200th video. I found your channel 2 years ago and have watched every episode since. You have a great voice, a clever way of telling a story that needs telling, and a pleasant demeanor even when putting forward some fairly ghastly information. I cannot thank you enough for what you do or how you go about doing it, I certainly could not hold back the vitriol like you do. So keep on as you are, mix things up as you see fit to keep your interest in doing this channel. Whatever you choose to put on KZitem, I will certainly watch it.

200! 🎉There are studies that drivers actually speed up in dense fog if they don't pay attention. I was transferred here almost 2 years ago, and now there are many warning systems in place, but in the time I've been driving on this stretch of highway regularly, there hasn't been a lot of fog, in fact very little. Since you say Bowater is closed now, perhaps they were much more to blame than previously thought.
@celestialnature6061

Bowater actually closed due to money issues as the plant has not been very profitable. It has since changed hands and the new owners have pretty much shut the plant down since they were hemorrhaging money

Congratulations on 200 episodes. If you decide to bring back earlier series, my vote is for Strange Places. As to I-75, I'm north of the location where the pileup occurred. The drivers up here aren't any better. It's seldom we have fog with which to deal, but when it comes to snow, anything more than two flakes means the road will be closed at some point. Typically it will involve Captain Slow (afraid to go more than 15 mph, often in the fast lane) colliding with Captain Jackass (driving 90 in a 55 because his car has all the latest safety equipment). The highway gets shut down in one direction by the accident, and the other direction slows to a crawl as people have a good look in hopes of seeing a fatality.

I've driven through this area before, the first time at night in heavy fog with the entrances blocked by gates. The speed limit signs are bright screens that have the numbers change automatically (70 mph in good weather), the lines between the lanes almost touch with reflectors between them, the shoulder is filled with angled white lines and reflectors from lane edge to road edge, and the right side has many yellow reflectors on the road as well as yellow reflectors atop poles. The cause is absolutely the paper plant on the river. You're driving through the plant's emissions being held down by the weather. It's similar to when you see a fireplace's smoke stop at a certain level and then travel sideways. The rotten smell is the giveaway that it's from the paper plant. People who live in the area suffer from health issues from the emissions as well.

I used to drive along US Rt. 322 through Pennsylvania just northwest of Harrisburg at night, where it was a high speed 4-lane stretch of highway, and when the mountain fog socked it in it became really scary, not because I can't slow down to drive in fog, but because of all the idiots who think it's okay to blow by me at 75 mph without being able to see far past the hood of the car. I understand risky behavior, especially among young guys who are in a hurry, but the sheer stupidity of some people and failure to foresee the consequences of it amazes me sometimes.

Around 10 years ago on Thanksgiving there was a massive pileup on I-10 East outside of Beaumont, Texas. Fog and speed were the contributing factors. Whenever passing through to the Beaumont area I try to avoid I-10 like the plague as it’s like the opening lap in a NASCAR race at 75+mph.
