While the definition of a first-generation college student can be complex, Andrea examines her journey of how her identity as a first-generation college student boxed her to conform to negative stigmas. Discover the invisible challenges of possessing a complex identity as Andrea challenges higher education and peers to redefine what a first-generation college student is. As the first in her family to go to college, Andrea Hernandez, a trailblazing social worker from Dallas, Texas, earned her bachelor's degree from Hope College. She is passionate about empowering underrepresented groups, advocating for equal opportunities, and fostering inclusive communities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
