As a former EA to the General Counsel of a Fortune 100.... Never assume they have time to dedicate to you and your questions. Often they don't even take their lunch breaks unless they're mandatory working lunches. Build relationships with them!!! Bring them a coffee when you get yours, grab their docs off the printer for them, support their contributions/projects - simply put: be an ALLY if you want them to be yours.

Why do we even have to deal with politics at work? Im there to get money and support my family. I don’t have the mental capacity to deal with such wasteful things.

I’m sorry to tell you this, but how much money you earn at a company is almost 90% about office politics and 10% the actual value you add. Obviously that ratio differs between companies, but it is over 50% office politics anywhere.

Make yourself as indispensable as possible so you can't be fired without severely hurting the company's capabilities. Proceed to ask very tough questions in meetings and challenge executives (for example, blanket return to office policies with zero logic).

What??? Within a week or 2 Take the executive assistants out and ask them about people??? WRONG!!! You don’t know who’s connected to whom. Those executive assistants are likely to go back and tell them execs you’re nosy, and a gossiper. No way! Usually love your advice but this one might get you more trouble than it’s worth.
@CeceXie

you don’t ask them for gossip about people. you ask them about strategies to best work with people, which is the truth. it’s all about the phrasing and framing
@officesuperhero9611

@@CeceXie you said “take them out and ask about the cast of characters “. That’s about the people. Regardless, when new to the office, rule is to observe and see who’s connected to whom. Your strategy could backfire big time.

i think there is a huge difference between asking about the cast of characters and asking about gossip. i also believe that observing the rules of a new work environment is helpful for success in navigating that environment, and the EAs tend to have the most knowledge about any work environment. being able to learn from them speeds along this learning process much more

You can be perfectly appropriate and others will twist things. Make individual connections with the assistants over time and watch people very strategically and carefully. Co-workers can be really grimy.
