Islandbridge, Dublin, 1919 - Today
Panel: David Averill, Angela Rolfe, Tim Skelton
Host & Moderator: Robin Prater
The Irish National War Memorial commemorates the 49,400 Irish men who lost their lives during the First World War. This last of Lutyens’s war memorials to be built has a unique history and shows the benefits of the development of his ideas during his work with the War Graves Commission.
Panelists:
David Averill
David Averill studied at Bolton Street College of Technology from 1980 to 1986 where he gained a Diploma in Architecture and a Degree in Architectural Science from Trinity College Dublin. He has been working with Sheehan & Barry Architects since late 1986. He was made an associate in 1998 and has been a partner since 2002. He has been a member of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland since 1989. David has developed a particular interest in the conservation of buildings as well as how buildings can be sensitively added to or updated where required. He has worked on a number of significant Conservation projects during his time with Sheehan & Barry.
Angela Rolfe
Angela Rolfe provides architectural and urban design advisory, strategic planning, project co-ordination and project management services for a range of built environment projects in the heritage and cultural sectors.
Tim Skelton
Tim Skelton has been interested in the work of Lutyens since a visit to Castle Drogo on a wet afternoon in the 1980s. He is particularly interested in the architect’s lesser-known works which led, in 2008, to the publication of “Lutyens and The Great War” (co-written with Gerald Gliddon) which was the first in-depth look at his work in connection with World War 1. Tim’s investigations into Lutyens’s private memorials is a natural continuation of this work.
