The part that made me cry was when, since the movie had correlated the giant's more peaceful nature with the dent in his head, and when he thinks Hogarth is dead the dent ablates and he goes all kill crazy, but then when Hogarth tells his him "you are who you choose to be", and he returns to his peaceful form, that means that Hogarth was right, the giant DOES have a soul. It wasn't just a side effect of the dent in his head, he really did have the goodness and kindness inside of him, he had the power to choose and *even when he has been restored to full faculty*, he CHOSE to love and care, and to fully reject the institutional violence Mansley represents. That's what fucking got me. Not that he was nice, but then even when all the cards were on the table, even when he was restored to his full capacity, his INFORMED choice was still one of compassion. That it was not some childish side effect of temporary brain damage, it was a valid choice and one he actively and with his full spirit engaged in.

I honestly don't think it's less impactful with the Giant coming back, because despite all we knew of the Giant's ability to rebuild himself, we still didn't believe he could survive a nuke. By the point in the movie where we discover he is still alive, even if we still remembered the Giant could rebuild himself, seeing the jaw screw just sitting in the box kind of lulls you into thinking that this is it. It's probably the most clever trick in the whole film, using the screw that made us laugh to convince us that it was done, and then allow it to deliver us a happy conclusion. Not every story needs to have a gloom and doom ending. I think there are plenty of kids in Hogarth's position and worse that gained a lot of hope and probably led more healthy lives when the movie showed us that bad things don't always mean we lose everything. Not to critique your take, just to offer an alternative viewpoint. I can't help but be Devil's Advocate

I dunno about the impact part. Seen this movie many times, and I still legit broke down during the climax during this reaction. Honestly, i think not having the reassembly, one, would have messed up the earlier part showing he could do that, and two, it would have just been too much. and it doesn't cheapen the sacrifice because not even the giant knew he would survive that. the climax to this day is one of the most powerful scenes in film. just in how Matt was cracking at hogarths early line, as many do on rewatch, i think shows the lasting impact. Overall its an amazing film. the animation is beautiful, the comedic timing is perfect, the voice work is just wonderful (still one of Vin's best), and that music.... fun fact: one of the animators on this was Lauren Faust, she would go on work on the powerpuff girls along side her husband, series creator Craig McCracken, and to create Fosters Home for Imaginary friends, DC super hero girls, and the 2010 reboot of My Little Pony. as well as be the primary writer for the game Them's Fightin Herds, a fighting game that features different 4 legged animals as characters, which had started as an MLP fan made fighting game, but after that got C&D'd she offered to help transition it to its own IP and write the story and characters for them.

The director made this film inspired from when his sister was gun down by her ex-husband, so he questioned "What if a gun had a soul?", "How would it feel?" and "Would it still want to be one if it had a choice?" Thus birthed the cult classic we have now. This film was is also based on a book with a similar anti-war sentiment, but with a different story. Also, it always blew my mind that Vin Diesel voiced The Iron Giant, but it makes so much sense since he is the voice of Groot now.

"This film was is also based on a book with a similar anti-war sentiment, but with a different story." The original novel "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes was more focused on ecological problems than wars. You could say that it might have been an inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki's similarly themed animations Nausicaa, Laputa and Princess Mononoke. Although probably Laputa Castle In The Sky more than any other considering that also has its own flying robots of great destructive power that also become nurturing when left to their own devices.

@@arsenelupin9697 That's exactly how I felt even when I watched as a kid. Okay, so here's a little fun fact; This movie was released in 1999, the same year that 'Episode One' of Mr. Lucas's little space movie was released (you may have heard of it?). This was the third animated movie to be released by Warner Brothers that year (The first two being 'Quest for Camelot', and 'Cats Don't Dance'). Neither of these films made any significant impact at the box office, so it was decided that no significant advertising/marketing would be put behind 'The Iron Giant', because obviously, there was no public interest in animated movies (To this day, I hope those responsible for that decision are still looking for work... :-/). To add insult to injury, the MPAA did not have a category for 'Best Animated Film' at this time... 😞 Bonus fact; In 'The Incredibles', the call sign of the jet Helen is flying is 'India-Golf-Niner-Niner' (IG99), as an acknowledgement to this movie... 🙂

Not only that - but Brad Bird became good friends with the last two of the "9 Old Men" who animated so many of Disney's early works like Dumbo and Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. He put them in the movie as caricatures of themselves as the engineers of the train the crashes into the Giant. And they VOICED themselves too! And he did it AGAIN in the Incredibles! Right after the end of the big fight with the Robot downtown, there they are again! They both passed away within a couple of years after that film. But they legit liked what Brad Bird was doing enough to support him and let him cameo them in his (arguably) two most loved films!

There are so many beautiful messages and reminders. For example, the message that a weapon can choose to be something else reminds me of how the army creates soldiers, creates human weapons but they can always choose to remain or change when they return home. I loved this movie growing up!! I wished they made a great sequel to match the 1st! Now I gotta buy it in 4k. Yall should watch series, like band of brothers or the Pacific and war movies like we were soldiers. Also watch Hidden figures and the Ray Charles movie, ofc if yall haven't seen it yet

Sometimes, "One and Done" is enough. Sequels have been subpar, for the most part. Remember, Hollyweird is pushing The Message and Woke activists would wrap this property with the Rainbow Flag toot suite.

The dream sequence was originally a deleted scene. And I personally think it kinda spoils the climax for the Giant’s transformation.

And this is why when asked about the best movie Superman, the correct answer is "Vin Diesel".

When the Giant tells Hogarth "no following.." wrecks my shit every damn time.

Hogarth was also named after Burne Hogarth who was an artist and the style here suggests the animation team did their fair share of studying Hogarth's anatomy sketches. Also, I think it really cheapens sacrifice in these movies when every. single. kid's. movie/book has the pet/friend/robot DIE in the end. Gets old. Let kids have some happy endings, especially when the friend is, in fact, a robot. Why has every last one of these things got to have someone saying, "Oh, it's more impactful if they'd died for real..." See, that impact adults can't shut up about translates to "This scarred me for life" for a kid.

This is literally the only time the name "Superman" makes me cry. But that moment at the end does, EVERY time
