I would have thought one of the main weaknesses of the Tyranids is their dependency on Synapse creatures to maintain their collective consciousness... what if the Barghesi are literally a single individual spread over millions of individuals - one single identity manifest in every individual. Not a hivemind, but literally one mind, one identity in all. The Hive Fleet would be unified in purpose like never before, and completely unbreakable. You would literally have to destroy the entire invading Hive to its last member. Also, as separate Hive Fleets are at times competing for the same resources, the first Fleet to absorb this ability could effectively overwrite others with its own consciousness, eliminating competition among its own damn species... the one that gets it first is ensuring its own perpetuity.
@ashardalondragnipurake
2 ай бұрын
the hives fighting among themself isnt a flaw the nids want to get rid of its testing the prototypes and the most successful one gets all the resources and data its not a war, its resource redistribution keeping separate fleets alive is just wasteful as it leaves inefficient genetic lines alive, removing not natural but war selection from their constant evolution the reliance on synapse is also not really a weakness if the nids wanted they could already make each and every nid a synapse creature doing exactly what you believe the bargesi would give them its just horribly inefficient far better to keep a hormagaunt cheap, it doesnt need a brain, its wasteful to give them one

My take on the Iron Lords is that of being stuck doing a job, and important one, but low priority to everyone else. From my understanding the Iron Lords are still waiting for the greater Imperium to arrive to deal with the Barghesi, but the Imperium has a few other higher priority tasks to accomplish. So they contain, and wait and wait and wait. It speaks to me about continuing on in the face of indifference. I'm currently painting a squad of em. One issue I have with your Barghesi theory: why isn't the imperium then concerned about the Tyrranids eating Kroot? What you describe (active single generation evolution via consumption) is their entire stick already. What I think could be their trick: You described pretty hefty claw/slash damage to an armored astartes sooo.... organic power weapons?
@42Nightsyesterday
2 ай бұрын
Well the tyrannids kinda already have organic power weapons according to the lore. I mean you’re point is valid, that pretty much sounds like Kroot. An even bigger plot hole is why hasn’t the inquisition just nuked the barghesi out of existence instead of wasting a whole SM chapter on containing them for 3 millennia if these xenos are so important
@mementomori771

My first thought was also some means of automatic adaptation, but that wouldn’t explain the ability to break out of stasis. What we do know is that they use claws, can break through stasis, are capable of traversing between planets, and have a trait desirable to the tyranids. So, upon consideration I believe that the barghesi have the ability to manipulate space allowing for FTL or even instant travel over galactic distances. Since the tyranids don’t have FTL travel this would be a massive boon.

I think the DND angle is wrong. In 40k getting bigger from eating would be incredibly small fry. The interesting thing about the barghesi is that stasis alone is not enough to hold them. Stasis in 40k literally stops or alters the flow of time in area or bubble, if that isn't enough to stop a barghesi then that indicates some ability to control time and/or space. And the Tyranids with an ability like that is game over. Also hellhounds from modern fiction often have the ability to teleport or somehow move between worlds to hunt prey no matter the distance (a la karanak) so this would track with some kind of spacetime ability.
@timtoner
2 ай бұрын
@DeHerg mentioned that your theory is pretty much the Kroot, and the Nids have absolutely had them as a Happy Meal at some point. Given the emphasis on GrimDark tone, I would say that EVERYONE is correct--the Iron Lords were sent out to prevent that from happening, and they did an amazing job, but that ability has already been subsumed when another species was devoured, and now the Iron Lords are defending...nothing. But still doing an amazing job! Given how static the Imperium has become, no one has bothered to update them, and thus it is another example of the Imperium wasting resources on ideas that were AMAZING 3,000 years ago, but no longer are.

The Bhargesi aeem like a really cool xenos idea, but for them to have been hunted by this one chapter that seemingly never kills them all, it does feel a little cheap of an excuse to make a cool feature for the chapter's story, as surely now even if the imperium is as inefficient as we see in 40k, the Ordo Xenos not having taken notice of a threat seemingly this big for the future of the imperium and sanctioned an exterminatus or similar planetary level purge seems somewhat unbelievable
@revanne5012
2 ай бұрын
One thing i could see the Bhargesi possibly being is something like a race with a similar ability to the Perpetuals, so the constant killing of them isn't because they can reproduce so fast, but becasue when they die, after a certain amount of time either their body reforms from even the dispersed atoms, or their soul in the warp manifests a new bosy in real space so not even total obliteration of their physical form would work
@revanne5012
2 ай бұрын
And something like if they die on a planet and its still inhabitable by the time their soul forges another body they stay there, but if it gets exterminatus'd and is uninhabitable then they will all disperse over the galaxy, and thats why the Imperium doesnt want to outright destroy the place they already live

if the barghesi cant be exterminatus'd then it likely is able to enter the warp and exit anywhere. there was a similar case of giant dinosaurs that the inquisition killed off because they were scared what such a creature would do if it got corrupted. they hang around the grendel stars by instinct. it would lead to the tyranid being able to warp jump, considering the shear consistency such an ability would require by the barghesi to remain in the grendel stars. also, the ability to mutate on the field would be dangerous addition, tapping into the warp to supply the mutagenic power to change strategy, which with the current nids is a weakness as described. for a funny thing, it could be the inquisition feeding the hive mind false information getting it to spend resources against a fortified position for nothing.

@@Leofilmperson no a single synapse creature will control the surrounding creatures just fine losing the fleet and the norn queen is going to cause some serious feedback damage but if they survive that they will regoup around the synapse left on the planet and try their hardest to reclaim the planet and gather enough biomass to start a new fleet you wont have the shadow but thats more a numbers thing then a ship thing need a certain density to ddos the warp

@@ashardalondragnipurake That doesn't really address my point. Sure, a fleetless synapse creature can control lesser tyranids, but what reason do we have to believe it could communicate out of system?
