Chris O'Dowd did an expert job with this scene. Perfect balance between comedy and also something so real and empathetic. It's the only thing I can think of that makes me cry and laugh at the same time. For me it's the line "You were here, and then you were gone" that is the "moment".

I love emotional comedy, where it manages to strike the perfect balance between sad/touching and hilarious. Very difficult to do. Can't think of too many examples, either. There's this one (my favorite), the moment in It's Always Sunny where Frank has a mental breakdown with the pyschologist, and... actually, that's all I can think of off the top of my head 😕

As a dnd player, I can tell you that when you are playing with a CLOSE KNIT group of friends that you have known for years, you can indeed use the game as a way to deal with real life problems. Not just in this the most literal way, but resolving disputes, working out trauma, allowing yourself to get emotional in game when you can’t out, all of that. 10/10 representation, right down to the changing music to fit the ambiance.

rings so true. takes me back to the time that despite knowing and planning with DM i wanted to reroll a new character and figuring out current character's exit (party just finished Curse of Strahd and found a way out of Barovia) we made it that when I tried to leave I couldn't... I slowed in movement.... I began to turn into a living corpse... the fact I was killed and brought back using dark powers tied me to the plane. The other players didn't know about it in advance and I thought I was totally over the character and it was all worked out.....I started sobbing as I said goodbye to the party forever.. which did fit the emotional marks. There had been a few moments before that where I got misty eyed but none that intense. It was incredible. My only regret is not getting into ttrpgs sooner in life... being too much of a reclusive weirdo for even that.

@@fealca1622 wow that's an old phrase I haven't heard in a while (the possibility never even crossed my mind) . Still the laughter should never be louder than the actors. I don't blame the audience, Its the sound engineers fault. Maybe the tech is just so different now and it was hard to isolate different audio sources back then though, maybe it was a cost thing, I dunno ; I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume there's factors at play I'm not aware of. But still...... it's annoying. It's honestly been an issue for me to ever really get invested in the show. I watch a few episodes and find myself noticing when jokes fall flat to me more than when I'm in tears from laughter, because the audience makes it obnoxiously obvious I was supposed to laugh.
@fealca1622
5 жыл бұрын
@@thamapleboi What I appreciate about the show is there are times there's something meant as a joke and the audience actually doesn't laugh. Like, I remember the episode where Jen begrudgingly invites Roy, Moss and Richmond to the dinner party and when they arrive, she becomes worried about how they'll act and says "Oh, maybe I could just kill myself..." And no one in the audience laughed. It was clearly meant as a joke but the audience didn't seem to find it particularly funny. That's what I like about live audiences, an audience might like one joke way more than you would and not appreciate others. I much more prefer the dynamic reactions than the Big Bang Theory route of laughing hysterically at every joke or semi amusing line someone says.
@fartkerson

Oh get over it. Monty Python had a live audience laughing and so did Kids in the Hall and Married with Children. Hell, every classic stand up comedy special has people laughing loudly. Even a classic like I Love Lucy, which is the gold standard for comedy television. It doesn't detract from the experience. You guys just need to pull your heads out of your bums and move along.
