Fun fact: the head of programming at Channel 4 at the time was, believe it or not, called Michael Jackson, who made the decision to cancel the show. Phil Redmond created Jack Michaelson as the drug dealer, as a joke but to be fair, Paul Duckworth played the part really well. Everyone fought kicking and screaming to keep the show going but ratings were too low.

The Michaelson hanging was easily the most brutal and graphic scene in soap history. But it never registered any interest, outside of the remaining Brookside fanbase. If that had happened during the peak of the show, even post-watershed, it would have been a huge controversy. When I look back on Brookside now, it had a notable history of selling murder to the viewer as acceptable and excusable. And it was very persuasive. But I was recently watching the Mick Johnson story where he committed a mercy killing on his mother-in-law. If you really pay attention, he did it for selfish reasons and should have been convicted and jailed for murder. But they framed the story from such a sympathetic perspective of him, that you want him to get away with it. Even with the infamous Trevor Jordache murder, Mandy stabbing him to death is excusable as self defence but then the coverup job becomes the real crime. Plus they were already trying to poison him to death, so an element of pre-meditation was there. Brookside had an underlying macabre to it. They challenged the morality of the viewer. Fantastic TV, it made you sympathise with guilty criminals. powerful.

Yeah Brookside moved to a late night slot during its final months. Sometimes it was on as late as 12.15am, but on average it was between 11.05 and 11.30 pm

I think if you left him alone he'd leave you alone. Nearly everyone who ended up on his bad side initiated the interaction with him. If people kept to themselves and didn't bother him he probably wouldn't be interested.

When Jimmy imagined hitting Michaelson with a spanner, and shoving him into the car boot. That made me laugh. 😂😂 12:59 It fooled me, I actually thought it was genuine, rather than Jimmy imagining it. Really well filmed. I suppose it had most people fooled.
