For anyone that may not know, these were shamans, shaman flesh when cut has the unique ability to fuse with pieces, the Hornsent knew this and would gather shaman's before whipping and mutilating their bodies. They were essentially minced alive and then shoved into a big jar so all the meat would merge with a 'host' shaman to create these things and somehow the Hornsent saw them as closer to divine. It's a truly nightmarish thing to do to people...

Apparently Hornsent/Omen's (are they the same thing, or slightly different races?) horns are important for divine invocation, maybe by cutting off Omen horns, Marika was trying to stop them from incarnating deities and other strong spirits? Those born of royalty were allowed to keep their horns, but were shoved down the shunning grounds, maybe where Marika thought they wouldn't attract anything dangerous (and yet the Formless Mother still found Mohg...). Huh, coming to think of it, some of Morgott's horns seem cut off too, right? Maybe he was forced to have them cut off before leaving the shunning grounds to receive Marika's Grace 🤔

I like that despite being a very traumatazing event for Marika, she still took the practices for the Jars out of the Hornsent and turned it into something more positive and uplifting in her own order. Unlike the ones in the shadowlands, the GO Jars don't use live subjects to be created, but the remain of warrior, creating this kinda tradition in which even if you die a part of you may keep on living, as a part of a new warrior that will go on in their own journey of discovery, and when the end of that warrior jar comes, they can give part of their innars to another jar (in Alexander's case it was us) and then they will still live on into another warrior for eternity. As a final insult to the Shamans the frozen maggot items reveal that they ‘develop in great jar innnards, and are an invaluable source of sustenance to the prisoners.’ Meaning that as the shamans were mutilated and stuffed into jars to be turned into these things, the maggots growing from their rotting bodies were their only source of food…essentially cannibalism with extra steps. Marika was completely justified.

I wonder if that specific Hornsent in Bonny Village who said those cruel words to the shamans lived long enough to be subject to similar cruelties by Messmer’s crusaders when they invaded? I don’t know how long Hornsent lived but assuming he lived to see the crusade take place, I can only imagine it shifting from him whipping shamans with tooth whips and shoving them in jars like it's an ordinary day to him being captured by the crusaders before enduring days of being beaten and branded by serpent flails while being yelled at with slurs and obscenities by them such as being “Graceless scum” who’s only purpose is to be hunted, dehorned, impaled and burned before being forced to march alongside fellow Hornsent who’ve been rounded up, beaten, branded and dehorned to a furnace golem that has yet to come to life. As the Hornsent are being pushed and crammed inside the golem to the point where’s it’s getting hard to breathe, they are given a speech by a Black Knight captain who says that though they are graceless vermin with no place in the order, their lives will at least serve one purpose: as kindling for their holy crusade. The Hornsent suddenly reminisces on those shamans back in Bonny Village and realizes that he has become a victim to the same cruelties he inflicted on them. However, he has no time to think of his current predicament as the crusaders set the golem aflame and the screams of countless Hornsent and the stench of their burning flesh fill the air as the golem comes to life. So ends the life of one Hornsent among thousands, now used to fuel a lifeless machine of death and murder as it marches onto the battlefield. And so, the crusade continues.

Its only know got to me - Jars in Shadow Keep. In Messemers keep. Did he try do heal them? To help them? You find them in room with good beds and all. Were he trying to recover shamans from jars? To save some of Marikas people?
@the_furry_inside_your_walls639
12 күн бұрын
He was. I don't think it was even Marika's wishes to for him to try and help them. All that she could do was plant one last golden tree in her home village, knowing that it would never heal her people's pain. Messmer, hoping that it would maybe show some semblance of love and respect from his mother, probably tried to help aid the people, most likely seeing a bit him in them in the sense that they were both abandoned by Marika. However, his hope began to wane as he couldn't find any way to help the shamans or ease their pain, and Marika clearly wasn't paying anymore mind to the kind gestures. Thusly, Messmer ordered his men to leave the jar innards in the care room, hoping that at least some peace and quiet from his men in comfortable med beds would at least ease the suffering of the shamans, if even by a smidgen. He abandoned them, like his mother abandoned them, but he at least wanted to try his best to make sure they were as comfortable as they could be in that horrible state.

You know, lest we forget Marika is a Numen. If the Numen innately have this ability then it might explain how they created the silver tear mimics. Also I’m assuming Marika’s people were Numens who moved into the Lands of Shadow or something. If the Eternal Cities predated the Age of the Scadutree too (being smashed underground by the Greater Will), then Marika’s people might be those descended from those left on the surface, or simply left the Eternal Cities at some point.

Marika may of been a monster, and i'm not excusing her heinous crimes, but damn learning about the backstory behind her people and how they were shoved into jars by the hornsent, i can understand why she's essentially racist towards them. They stole all her village neighbors and forced them into these lumps of meat and flesh to create the jars as a form of unjust punishment. It makes her more sympathetic, but her crimes were still inexcusable, especially sealing away messmer because of her fear of his power over fire. He doesnt even know the current state of the Lands Between he's been stuck in the Lands of Shadow, he doesnt know his mother shattered the Elden Ring, he doesnt know she was sealed in the Erdtree, and as a last resort gave the tarnished the Light of Grace.

That last shot at the end of the hornsent spirits crying on top of the jars… so many ways you could take that, and all of them are depressing. Are they praying for the flesh within to meld and become a saint? Are they mourning their friends, who were rounded up and added to the Shaman soup? Or are their own bodies trapped in those very jars? I personally like to take the second choice, because it adds another layer of tragedy and self-destruction to the hornsent, with the Potentates torturing and butchering their own people to complete the jars. Not all of them were on board with the whole Saint-thing, it seems, and it’s even more tragic - and real - that Marika just treated them all as monsters. Well, maybe not all of them… there does seem to be one misbegotten who holds a promise he made to her very dear. And that’s just one more layer of beautifully shaded grey.

Being blinded like the maidens with that particular rune-like symbol carved unto their foreheads is particularly interesting. They way they contextualize the physical abilities of the Golden Order to be able to graft on flesh from other creatures and inadvertently inherit traits from things like the Omen & Serpents is such an interesting part of the lore in the DLC.
@BM-yy8db
15 күн бұрын
It recontextualises, or at least offers an explanation on how Godrick (and his scions) and Rykard's shenanigans work. It makes sense that they could have inherited the "shaman flesh melding" property of their mom. Godrick's grafting is on the nose, cut off one bit, glue on another. With Rykard you could argue that him getting turned into minced meat and getting eaten by his favourite snake allowed him to internally graft/meld inside of it.
@PierceArner
15 күн бұрын
@@BM-yy8db The shed snake skin beside the headless tree woman outside of Bonny Village along with Messemer's sister all but directly confirmed to be Melina pretty much confirm that all of Marika's twin children suffer some sort of physical malady inherited from her/her people's abuse in Bonny Village. Omen Horns, Phantom Limbs, Serpents, and other aspects of the Crucible initially being blessed eventually became shunned. It even describes why Godwyn's relationship with Fortissax allowed him to use their Golden Lightning, and why his undying corpse fused with the Erdtree roots to create Deathroot. Mostly though, I like how the Companion Jar talisman explains that the Jar folk did eventually become kind and were better than the parts that they were made of - but they too lived in a peaceful village full of flowers where poachers came to murder them and use their bodies as ingredients just like Marika's people had once done.
