Real sad to see how apples browser is so bad that it wasn't in the race on a macbook
@efficientapp
Жыл бұрын
It's definitely interesting, Apple builds amazing hardware, and even the OS (MacOS), but they've never been super great building software. Take iTunes for example. I think what Apple realized is they are a great platform and hardware, but they aren't trying to do everything, instead let developers do it. Arc is the amalgamation of exactly this. They have a standalone company investing tens of millions of dollars into building the best browser for MacOS (and eventually Windows), it serves the purpose that Apple is trying to make. Developers can spend the money doing that instead of them. Apple just needs to keep improving the OS and continue releasing killer hardware.

Haha they actually made a video titled "How will Arc make money?" (5:30 min mark): kzitem.info/news/bejne/xoyax2ewf36dm5g Essentially it's free for individuals, and paid for teams. Think Notion and others, say you want to share folders/spaces and make Arc more collaborative? That's a team feature and it's paid. And as a business, I'd happily pay for the team features. Look at Airtable for example, they have a SUPER generous free tier for individuals and small teams, because they also have businesses paying them millions per year for higher permission/team collaboration features.

how is battery life and RAM management on Arc? I would love to use it but I've heard it drains the battery really fast.
@efficientapp
Жыл бұрын
Super strange, we haven't had any issues with battery life-for us, we're getting better RAM management and battery life than Chrome. Are you on an M1 or M2 Mac? Can't speak to Intel Macs. That said, Arc is built on Chromium, so it's the same foundation as Chrome (extensions and such). I've only heard that Safari is slightly better in battery life, but the tradeoff is, you need to use Safari which is a complete no-go for me 😅 Depends on what you're comparing it against and the trade-offs.

I'm using MS Edge right now on M1 Pro with no issues. One thing I don't like about Arc is how it handles bookmarks. I use them as shortcuts in Edge, I don't want them open all the time.. :/
@efficientapp
Жыл бұрын
Ah okay, Edge is also built on Chromium, so the battery life will be similar if not better (more optimized) on Arc. What do you mean about bookmarks vs shortcuts, can you go a bit deeper in that? Arc doesn't leave all of your bookmarks open at all times. Do you mean the actual bookmarks loaded in the background? Or the bookmarks sidebar showing? With both, that's not the case. You can also easily hide the sidebar with CMD + S and it goes to a hover to show mode (or quick show with CTRL + Spacebar). I'd say genuinely give it a shot if you haven't, although happy to try and answer a workaround if you expand a bit on what you're referring to re: shortcuts in Edge.

whats an actual benefit of arc over other browsers
@efficientapp
Жыл бұрын
So a big part of this is actually the fluidity and experience of using it, if you try it out, I think you'll see. In going down the benefits/features: They've totally rethought the bookmarks and tab experience, along with introducing a feature called "Spaces". Spaces allow you to stay focused and easily segment your work while easily organizing tabs are important to you in folders. For example, set up a personal space, favorite your KZitem, Spotify, WhatsApp, and Gmail tabs-from there, they function like mini apps. Now, with the swipe of 2 fingers, you're in your work space. All of your favorite apps are swapped out with your work apps, and you're logged into all of your work accounts. No other browser lets you segment work to this degree. It's so powerful, yet such a simple implementation. Tough to truly explain without experiencing it yourself. What clicked for me, regarding what they are building and where they're headed, is when someone explained this to me (as an avid user of Chrome before Arc)-take Chrome: Google is in the business of ads, so they are actually incentivized to give you a crummy tab management experience. Because what happens if finding the tab you're looking for is difficult? You open up a new tab and search Google again (and you're shown more ads). So it's more that the UI/UX in many ways by the industry leader is built in such a way to optimize for displaying ads. Arc on the other hand is building features that give you a better experience, first-and-foremost. It's one of those genuinely go download it and give it a try, the magic is in using it, not in trying to explain the features. This video started with me debating with David for 5 hours about why he should try Arc. Then he tried it. And 2 days later, he totally "got it". Sometimes this type of stuff can't be described so much with words. If you want to go down that path, I've written an entire article that goes into the depths of the benefits/features of Arc and why we're using it here if you have interest in learning more + seeing GIFs of it in action: efficientvc.com/conviction

But go ahead sheep, i know mac users, you dgaf about your personal data, you hand them out for free like candies to every website you visit, with all those autofills, and now you have given arc all the candies and still say "its just an email for bots or whatever" when they, themselves dont say its about bots even in their privacy page.
