Wow, I love your perspective on this phenomenon. It lays out plainly something everyone kind of stumbles through in a fog. This is so helpful. And I can't tell you how much I appreciate the consistently encouraging and uplifting takes you share on this channel. It's just really impressive. (Unpopular take here, tucked away at the end: While I agree that the learning/confidence trend you describe reflects pretty much everyone's experience, it seems clear there is a pronounced gender difference in how it plays out, with women's confidence tending to be much lower then their male counterparts even when a woman's competence is comparable or higher. The confidence gap between men and women impacts women's lives for the long-term, and often means women forgo opportunities that men of similar levels of competence will pursue. This is a truly tragic trend as women set themselves up for less long-term financial security in spite of comparable levels of competence. So shining a light on the Dunning-Kruger effect and how it plays out is incredibly helpful.)

Love this! I find myself buying a new piece of kit, thinking I’m completely amazing, finding out I’m completely shite, then learning how to be better over the next few years lol it’s a vicious cycle

Glad you like this video, hope you found it helpful. It is a vicious cycle, but if you know what is going on and know about the cycle this certainly helps rather than just feeling high and then plummeting to a low

Valley of despair hit me really hard , in 2001, when finishing a 3 years college degree in arts and photography, with dreams, and possibility in my head, because I am a hard worker, fast learner and I had good skills ( but big scholarship debt), digital took all the place, and everything melt away. I was so upset by the poor quality of the camera and I couldn't understand why people love it! I was in shocked...of course, for the first time , many people loved themselves in picture ( I truly think it is because of the low quality, no more blemishes, wrinkles...every body flaws disappeared ...every body looked 25 years old....lool) there was the best pictures of there whole life, and cheap price!! I didn't touch a camera for over 5 YEARS ... yes, I did refuse clients that wants me to do poor quality picture,( many, sorry, I don't lower quality to fit your expectations , ) until people will forget that I am a photographer , and stop asking ( maybe I forgot too , for a while...). MISSING PHOTOGRAPHY too much, I bought a 1700$ digital kit, (minimum wage in a photo lab, thinking that I will upgrade quickly my gear with income) I hated this camera so much( hard time figuring out , how to take good picture with it) , It keeps me away from my passion again.. I WAS TELLING MY FRIENDS: DON'T SAY THAT I TOOK THIS PICTURE, EVEN IF YOU LIKE IT🙈, ( BAD MARKETING HERE, I KNOW, I WORK ON IT 🤓, I ALWAYS SAID, MY HONESTY IS My WORST ENNEMY ..LOL) AND I WAS UNABLE TO CHARGE. . SO , 20 YEARS IN VALLEY OF DESPAIR IS ENOUGH! ☀️ huuuum , sorry , I feel like I did a therapy here...! I am so bad in summarizing things... My apologize. 🧐😂😇 Thank you Jess for all your videos. helps me a lot to bring back photography in my life, the healthy way ⭐️

At the very bottom of the Valley of Despair at the moment after realizing earlier this year I new next to nothing about photography. This realization came after deciding to try to become a professional because "my pictures were so damn good" aka being on top of Mount Stupid for a couple of years previous to that. Thanks for giving concept/definition to this very real thing I'm going through/we all go through. I intend to ride that slope up instead of giving up :)

Yes Angel 🙌 I find it helpful to look at my work/portfolio (or ask someone else to who is experienced and will be honest) to suggest a few things to explore. New techniques, new theories, new concepts and new styles. Then, plan time in the diary to do those things. 5 minutes each day adds up to whole load of progress up that slope. And remember, strive for progress, not perfection 💪

Great video and a very true concept, I left photography 8 or so years ago in the valley of despair and it took me a good while to take the jump into picking up a camera again and try to learn all I believed I knew before. Your videos have been a huge help in that, sharing your knowledge and best practices has helped me pick up tips or areas to research further. So Thank you for sharing all you do and keep up your amazing work and content

very interesting subject and so very true and this probably can affect mental health issues, depression, anxiety etc as you move through the curve. Knowing the sequence and how to overcome it and deal with it and what to expect can be an invaluable tool. Never heard of the Dunning-Kruger effect so thank you for bringing it up and as always, presenting it in your unique and amazing way. The way you present your videos, with your confidence, attitude and expressions always make them an enjoyable experience, so thank you. Im going to do a little more research on this and delve deeper into it. Ric

Yes absolutely! The hit to confidence in that valley is genuinely crushing - it’s very difficult to work a way out safely - you must surround yourself with people who help, or switch your mindset to be incredibly hardened for perseverance, both of those things are hard - but it is with great effort comes great reward so we just gotta keep going 🤓

Funny!!! Wedding shoots are what put me in the Valley of Despair. I am rubbish as a wedding photographer, and have not offered my services professionally. However, I've had two people ask me to shoot their wedding for them. I told them that I do not have the skills nor the equipment to shoot a wedding professionally; but they wanted me to do it any way. Consequently, I have spent months editing those images trying to fix what can't be fixed. I've improved the images; but they're still rubbish. The one thing I like about wedding photography is shooting the candid moments, which I always prefer over posed shots. Even when I have people pose for a photo, I catch them getting into position and breaking it. I love those images most. The wedding I shot in 2015 took me about 4 months to edit. Everyone else was much happier with my work than I was; but I KNOW my images did not look professional. Right now, as soon as I finish watching this video, I'll be getting back to editing my stepbrother's wedding, which I shot 3/7/2020!!!! I'm ridiculous! I only have 15 images left and plan to be finished with them by Christmas.

I could relate so hard with the graph I actually got goosebumps 😂 Back in April i started doing photography, I already knew the basics so I was pretty confident giving my very small amount of experience. Then in The beginning in may I was very deep in the “valley of dispair”. I immediately started watching tutorials on KZitem, over the months I became a lot better, to the point that if I look back at photos / Posts of that time period I’m cringing (hard actually 😂). Now I feel like I’m near the end of the graph and I can achieve 90-95% of the things I want to create.

I'm trying to climb the slope but forever feeling that my equipment just won't get me there! I have definitely slightly improved in editing but can't afford the lenses needed to get good action shots or great Bokeh. I would love to be able to do paid shoots to be able to raise money to get better kit.. but I don't feel like I can charge at this stage, its tough!

Often people don't recognise this in themselves because they are unaware of the Dunning-Kruger effect. As you are aware of this effect, the point at which it is often realised is when you fall from the peak and know you know that this is just part of the journey 🤓

Oh! I DO have people who encourage me! Unfortunately, as I understand it, this is something most people do not have. Most of my friends and family have more confidence in me than I have in myself. If only my level of self-confidence could match their level of confidence. A few push me to offer my services professionally and fake it 'til I make it. I wouldn't dare do that.
