I understand why Walt made The Jungle Book more light hearted than it originally was because The Jungle Book is very violent & dark for the following reasons: - after Mowgli was adopted into the "man-village" his adopted family was about to burned at the stake for harboring a "boy witch" & what does Mowgli do? He sends a herd of elephants to trample & crush everyone in the village except for his family; - Mowgli not only kills Shere Khan, he skins him and brings his pelt over to the wolves as a gift

It might have been mentioned previously, but the animals are larger than normal because they want to give that feeling of everything looking bigger when you're a child etc. And King Louie is not an orangutang, but a gigantopithecus, as he sings.

I see your point with Scarlett Johansen as Kaa but I personally enjoyed her spin on the character and besides, in the original book Kaa's gender is never specified. Also, when I actually first watched the animated movie, it was quite jarring for me to hear pooh bear's voice coming from this villain, and I've never really got over it.

I don't know what Kaa does in the book but he doesn't do much in cartoon either. He hypnotizes Mowgli with his song, then banters with shere Kahn for a couple of minutes, Kahn leaves and Mowgli wakes up and kicks him out of the tree. Then he slinks muttering to himself and is never seen again. Honestly, I don't even remember him in the jungle book 2.

I can kind of see where they were coming from with Kaa in this film. The director said he wanted to have Kaa be a female as he felt the story was a little too male heavy. You can kind of see Kaa as being like a somewhat trusting motherly figure to Mowgli and that is how she lures him in so much as Mowgli trusts his mother fully so would trust Kaa as well. I did find her to be kind of creepy. So I guess they did a good job. Great review Matt

What I thought was interesting is that there were actually more parts from Kipling's book in this movie. The water truce, the myth about the elephants creating the jungle and Mowgli stealing fire from the man-village were all part of the book. The same thing happened with Cinderella. That movie had nods to both the Grimm and Perrault versions. It shows that they are going back to the source material and making, if not faithful adaptations, movies that are sort of compromises between the original books and animated movies.

Scarlet Johansson was cast for Kaa because Favreau felt that the cast was a little too male heavy. That's something I can appreciate in my book, but I still kind of wish that they made Kaa a friendly character to Mowgli like he/she was in the original book. Eh, oh well though. While this movie takes some elements from the book and is more faithful to it than the animated film, you can tell it pays closer homage to the Disney adaptation. In the grand scheme of things, Kaa's role in the film is a very small nitpick for me; the score was gorgeous, the cast was great, and the editing put into this film is astounding. I personally liked most of the differences from the animated film. It's a remake, yes, but those different twists and turns and elements taken from the book keep it from being completely predictable for those who've seen the animated film.

From what I remember Kaa was never an important character in the first one either. He shows up, tries to eat Mogli, and spends the rest of the film as a comic relief. Personality wise Disney's first Kaa had a lot more to offer, but unless I'm remembering things wrong he, or she, was never important. Heck, even Kipling only used him as an ex machina.

Kaa is actually an ally to the main characters in the original stories. He is the most feared creature, outside of Shere Khan, due to his hypnotic stare and deadly embrace. However he is also wise and will aide should he be called upon which happens when Mowgli is kidnapped by the Banderlog (that’s the monkey folk) where Kaa aides Balto and Bagheera in the rescue

I'm guessing why they cast Scarlett Johanesson as Kaa is probably that they couldn't find someone who does a good Sterling Holloway voice or Jim Cummings was busy working on the fifth season of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. And yes, MMC gets renewed for a fifth season yet Wander over Yonder is given the axe just because reruns are somehow more profitable than new episodes. Plus, when do you think Mat will learn about a live action remake of Disney's Peter Pan?
@joinmarch76

Actually, despite it still being slightly off from the book, it ironically has a bit more to it than you say aside from characters. For a start, they actually speak a bit more about the Law of the Jungle that Kipling wrote about. Like how in times of drought around the watering hole, they don't try killing each other; how fire in this is mainly dubbed The Red Flower, and there's even some nods to characters that weren't even in the Disney film; like Mao the Peacock and Ikki the Porcupine. Not to mention, they also give some more nods to the book by explaining Mowgli's origins more closely to how it was in the novel. Granted, the laws aren't quite as apparent as in the book; but to be fair, that kind of writing's hard to make casual. And while the aforementioned Mao and Ikki are more fanservice and less characters, at least they gave more credence to the original material. Incidentally, regarding Ikki, this was Gary Shandling's final role before his unfortunate and early death this year. Though, it is also a shame that with this in mind, there's *still* no sign of the fabled Tabaqui! He was prominent as a teritary antagonist in the book, and was the jungle's proverbial buttkisser, especially to Shere Khan. As for why Kaa's got Scarlet for a voice...well, you got me, but I bet it's some sort of subtle message on stranger danger regarding who Mowgli can really trust in the jungle. That, and you gotta admit, her version of Trust in Me was very beautiful. That isn't to say the Disney classic is bad; far from it, I have many fond memories of this film growing up, and it's one of Disney Sr.'s last great works before his untimely demise. But I like how this film tried harder to make Rudyard's work more, for lack of a better word, natural in terms of lore. There's a good reason why Kipling's work is often written like it is in Disney's adaptation and in other adaptations: Rudyard's style's pretty hard to make casual. The way he tells his stories is kind of like with Tolkien's works or C.S. Lewis: When written, it seems natural. In the film, it can come off as needlessly expository and awkward.

The animals aren't actually any taller. However in the animated version their proportions are very human and humans are one of the most slimly build mammals. The animals are the same height compared to him as in the original but they have the much more massive build of animals and therefore seem much larger. For example brown bears are actually about the same height as a normal average man yet they weigh more than 3 times as much.

About Kaa; they wanted to include a female character because most of the original characters consist of males. Plus, Johansson as Kaa was one of the greatest aspects of the movie, due to her towering appearance and her voice meant to sound concerning and motherly while at the same time, cynical. Plus, was I the only one who felt chills run down my spine when she uttered her name, sounding a mixture of a dying person and a revenant. Also, was I the only one who was glad that the vultures and elephants never spoke, because really. It would be rather awkward and a little too cheesy seeing elephants singing that they're in the army, and basically the Beatles in bird-form. I know that this film had their cheesy moments like Baloo singing with Mowgli laying on his belly, and King Louie's singing moment being basically his film version, but that's all the cheesiness we need.

I actually thougth they got the relationships down really well so that we felt with every animal stepping up to protect Mowgli. Spoilers: I was worried about Baloo at first but when he said he liked Mowgli as he was and showed that he whould protect him from danger then I bought into it. Not as good as the animated one but I rank that as maybe the top 3 Child and Parent relationships in any movie. This movie had the wolves involved much more then the animated one. I mean Mowgli dose´t even talk to any of them there. It´s a little hilarious actually. That they removed the vultures was no issue for me. Those are nit picks because that was simple there choice to make the moive as good as they could. Scarlet as Kaa can I admtit is a little pointless. Just a strange plot point that is cool but out of nowhere, I think Louie could know as well, he got spies all over the Jungle. This movie combined a lot of things from the book. Mowgli saving the elephant baby. That´s a good way to change them for me, making them hade this god status among other animals. Shere Khan got a more involving role and menacing present. I loved the fight Bagherra and Baloo had in the City of Ruins. So I say they accomplished there goal of making a movie faithful to both the animated beloved classic and the book and still stand on it´s own. I really liked this movie.

Talespin was awesome, only relation being it used characters from the movie but come on, Baloo flying an airplane & fighting air pirates is so entertaining. It has to count. In my humble opinion, the Netflix original film Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018) is superior in every respect, particularly the design of the animals. Unlike in The Jungle Book (2016), the animals in Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle were voiced and portrayed through motion capture by their respective actors; they benefit, and are indeed enhanced, by all the subtleties and complexities of the actors' performances.

I think Alice in Wonderland it's one of my favorite guilty pleasures, personally, I think it a good movie with a boat load of flaws. normally that would make me I'm happy, but Tim Burton's dark atmosphere gets me every time. Shoot. Great review though

Baymax as my witness, when I have a long-running animated KZitem review channel that barely hits the 20,000 viewer mark, I, too, will take the fun and sincereity out of life for my viewers by selling out.

I would love to see you review the animated one, but you are sick so I will wait until that will happen.

This is the only Disney remake I like. The visuals are quite excellent, the acting can be fun (except ScarJo could’ve been cut out considering Kaa does so little compared to the animated original), the score is good by John Debney & a good SNL joke is included 😆 I also like they delved into the darker moments of the original stories. Yeah that’s a bit jarring, but it’s closer to the spirit of Kipling’s writing. I still love the original animated film more, but this remake is worthy enough to not copy its source film; looking at you future Disney remakes that have come out

Honestly, I'm so glad that finally after so many terrible/meh live action remakes by Disney, we finally get something that is amazing and entertaining to watch. I just hope do we continue this trend in the future since the Alice sequel does look interesting, but I'm not so sure about the new Cinderella remake, especially just how much the story is changed. Also, I really do like it just how fateful to the book this movie is compared to the animated flick. A 9/10 in my book. Also, about that Dumbo remake on its way... yeah I like Tim's work, but I'm not sure about this one, like at all.

+Zodia195 Damn right, I like Emma Watson, but boy are those some big shoes to fill. Belle is one of my favorite animated characters period, and Paige O'Hara's original performance is top 10 best Disney voice acted performances. Can sing like no other as well. I did her she is giving her voice lessons, that's a step in the right direction. But in the end, I doubt it will earn the justification to exist, unlike this one and Cinderella 2015.

Tyler Bioshock R Given it's set in live action, it could be a combination of an adaptation fo the flm and the broadway play? You know, aside from the songs, they could take elements from the play and put it in.

Dejay Page Maybe, honest to god I am not the biggest fan of the changes the Broadway show made. But they are hardly deal breakers, I just feel they didn't improve anything. Except for adding Human Again back in, which the animated film promptly did the same in the Special Edition, and it was a fine addition. I need to see a trailer first, but I am not particularly expecting much.

I personally don't count the Burton Alice in Wonderland movies as part of the Disney Live Action Remakes seeing as how it has nothing to do with the cartoon. To me they all start with Maleficent.

Nope, I think so too. This version of him is DEFINITELY ten times more badass than the whiny animated movie one.
